Wheels stolen; no Porsche dealer within 3 hours
 

Hey guys,

Been lurking here for a while. Today I had my wheels stolen from my Boxster S and the car was left with all the weight on the driver side control arms (?) it seems.

I contacted insurance and they are offering to tow the car to a local collision shop (which have a few worrying reviews).

I'm worried that there may be damage to the suspension and other components, and would like a Porsche specialist to evaluate the car. Unfortunately, the nearest Porsche dealership is 240 miles away (San Antonio).

Is my concern justified? Should I insist on getting the car transported to San Antonio so the Porsche dealer can have a look at it or is there minimal risk of damaging the suspension from this? I'm in McAllen, Texas, which is 3 hour and 40 minutes away from the dealer.

Let me know what you guys would do in this situation.

Man, that's BS. I'd have it hauled to a local Porsche shop. Is it still covered under Porsche Roadside Assiistance?

Dude, that sucks real bad! F#*@k!! You got to move outta there! If it happened once, could happen again! I would get a flat-bed and haul it to Porsche dealer. You can pay the difference in towing expense from whatever the distance/amount covered by the insurance. I am sure more informed-members would chime in on possible damages and what to look for.

How the hell do you move it without putting wheels on it? Probably do more damage just trying to move it without wheels. That REALLY sucks!!!

How is that going to be put on a flat bed truck?? No, no do not let them drag it up onto the truck. You need the Porsche dealer to bring a jack and set of wheel and tires to install inorder to haul it back to the dealer for inspection. Insurance should cover all of that.

OMG what the hell! So sorry to hear about this. WTF is wrong with people? I concur. Dealer for sure! Oh man! So bummed!

I would only trust a Porsche dealer in this instance. I would call the dealer and ask what they recommend per your situation.

It's unfortunate to have this happen. My neighbor had his Lincoln navigator sitting on blocks last fall right on the front street. Since yours is sitting on the ground I would suggest only the dealer as it needs to have a good going over by a Porsche tech. Typically the dealer will order up new wheels and tires than install on the car before transporting to the shop. If it was me I would accept nothing less from the insurance company. This is comprehensive coverage so they usually have more flexibility. Remember the goal is to pay out as little as possible so you have to make it clear what is expected.

side note. Wheel locks? i'm googling it now!

And what would likely happen if the tow guy dragged it along the ground! That could be VERY expensive for the insurance company.

Wow. I haven't seen anything like this since I lived in NYC. Is there a local independent Porsche shop? Where do you have the car serviced now? Have them order new wheels and tires to install on the car (before attempting to move it). Then, have them check out car or drive to Porsche dealer for an inspection. At the very least you'll require a good balancing and alignment job. Good luck to you!!

Where are you? Perhaps the local PCA Region folks can reccomend a shop who'll help source some wheels to borrow or help in some way.

I can't add much to what has been posted other than to say since you are across the Rio Grande from Mexico, I would use wheel locks. They are not 100% fool proof but take time enough to defeat to scare away some wheel thieves.

What year is your car? I have an extra set of 987 wheels with 18" Michelin PS2s here in Victoria. The tires are old but plenty of tread to at least let you move the car. If you need them to move the car and have a way to send someone up here with a truck, you can borrow the set for a while. PM me if interested.
