I picked up a roll of 1/2" red gaffer's tape on Amazon.

Been selling this fabric paint for 20 years. When I get a sample alcantera to practice on I will try this.

They also sell a suede finish and transparent version that would be more subtle.

3M Vinyl was easier to get a clean cut with than the gaffer tape I tired, and the matte finish blends perfectly if you have a leather wheel. Also really easy to nudge around into the seams when warm.

What happens to the tape, and the glue when the car sits in the sun and the interior gets really hot"?
I'd love to do this but I'm worried about having sticky stuff on my leather steering wheel, and the tape sliding around making a goopy mess on the track. Normally my hand doesn't touch the top of the wheel (on the track) but there are a couple tracks with corners where I reposition my grip. I don't want a situation where I have to be thinking about where NOT to touch the steering wheel.
Has anyone had this mod on their leather steering wheel for awhile, through various seasons and temperatures? Any problems with tape sliding or repositioning when it gets very hot?
I assume if I did the mod and the glue became a problem I can remove the tape and use a leather cleaner/conditioner to remove the glue and make the wheel good as new.
Would love to hear from folks who did this, and whose car sits in the sun all day (like at a race track) to see if is has degraded at all.

The tape on my car starts to get a bit dirty looking after about 8-10 months. Peel it off and put a new piece on. No issues with the leather wheel in my car. And I do drive my car, currently a bit over 16,000 miles.
My car has spent time sitting in the sun for extended periods.
