This has to be them testing. I’ll kiss my 981 GTS goodbye only when I can get my hands on one of these.

If this article is legit, I gotta say I didn't see this coming. Thought Porsche had made its turbo 4 bed with the 718 and now had to lie in it. If true, it's tantamount to an admission that the turbo 4 experiment has been a colossal failure, isn't it?

Talk about backpedaling, wow.

Interesting development, if comes to fruition. It'll be more sought-after than the Spyder since most people can't stand the manual top. If it is slotted between GTS and Spyder, then it sure will move up the Spyder higher in price point. It could also depress Spyder's volume. To compensate, the Spyder really needs to up the ante in terms of driving dynamics and visceral feel. Being a GT could help with that. Nonetheless, this might be risky move, for the Spyder!

I don't think Porsche thought a turbo-4 would be cheered and successful. It is widely accepted that it is an interim step toward electrification. However, if a new model does get a NA 6, I would think it's an odd move, though would be welcomed by many.

hf1 must be doing somersaults!

Seriously, I don't think "most people" hate the manual top. I think more dig the looks and love the humps and if given the choice would choose not to lose both in favor of a power top. I'm betting the vocal minority in favor of a power top are just that -- a minority.

Agreed, Henry. Maybe the $117K base MSRP reported elsewhere in this thread doesn't seem so out of line.

I don't think the new Spyder's volume is going to be that great to begin with, probably in line with prior 987 and 981 production figures of 800-900 cars for the U.S. There will always be a market IMO for a hard core Spyder variant and this story line, if true, adds additional logic to the next Spyder being a product of the GT Dept.

I’m super stoked for a 6 cylinder GTS-like 718 Boxster. While it won’t have the cool look of the Spyder top, it’ll make up for it with worry free front ground clearance and an easy to operate top. I’d be much more inclined to actually drive regularly such a car than a Spyder. I hope it’ll have a big displacement 6 cylinder motor that can offer mid range torque comparable to the turbo 4. It certainly sounded nice in the video.

I haven’t bought a 981 GTS because the mid range torque is a bit lacking and the steering feel is a bit numb. A 718 GTS already has better steering and torque, but it lacks the exciting engine sound of the 6 cylinder. A 6 cylinder 718 GTS like model would be perfect.

No where does it state NA... it references the GT3 and GT4. Makes me wonder if they managed to figure out a Turbo six that will fit the 982 platform... something from the 992? Maybe a version of the yet to be released base 992? Doesn’t make sense to have a NA below the Spyder and GT4... they will model after the 911 model philosophy. It’s about the bigger picture of how each model aligns with each other not only within the 718, but 911 as well.

I disagree with this statement for multiple reasons.

Another possibility:
The GT4 and Spyder are about to be introduced... which means the 982 is at the end of lifecycle... This could potentially be the 982.2 mule? They could very well be realizing the failure of the 4 pot. 718 numbers are drastically lower... I can’t see them adding another model to a ever decreasing demanded model.
Year over year November volume is down -15.5% for the Boxster with a total year down -8.6%. Total year up to November was only 1,985 units for the USA. It’s the lowest volume model by a lot!

Every time I mention getting a Spyder my indy practically begs me to reconsider. News of a 718 non-Spyder six would make him very happy!

Not necessarily. The 982 GT4 is being introduced to match the already-introduced Clubsport; which was introduced at this time likely to get the 982 face in motorsport for marketing purposes.

Many manufacturers have been purposely trying to introduce halo cars earlier in the model lineup.

That is probably not a 982.2. Unlike the 992 compared to 991, the 982 really is just a 981 facelift. The suspension and chassis are essentially 981: the changes are in the engine and body.

P.S. - Nice username.

Hope you're right, Nick. But, how many posts have we seen that bemoan the manual top that us Spyder aficionados love? A lot! Even some of the present Spyder owners would jump ship given the alternative. I even remember reading someone (a Spyder owner) posting that he would be ashamed to operate the top in public since an expensive sports car has a manual top! Yup! So, I suspect the vocal crowd may not be minority. In fact, I suspect that the hardcore Spyder crowd is a minority!

Good points, Donovan. But, post-982.1 protos don't show up until after the launch of the final variant. Your other comment that it could a turbo-6 (that fits) is quite plausible. There is no pricing gap for a new model between GTS and Spyder unless Spyder moves way up. Not quite sure they would want to do that, given the performance #s (420 hp). So, I would speculate this could be turbo-6 for the next GTS or S.
