Yeah... it’s just a bad pic... after zooming in you can see where the logo trim piece is under the roof flap.

I've heard them referred to as wings, flaps, fins, flying buttresses, etc., but never as "ears." 
What's the point of the "ears"? Well, I'd like to think the "ears" serve a functional purpose (like those on the 987 Spyder) such that when secured they pull the top taunt, thus enabling the top to be speed rated all the way up to the Spyder's top speed of 180, however, that may be wishful thinking as they may be purely cosmetic on this gen. Even if not functional structurally, they definitely serve a design purpose continuing the look of the 987 Spyder's distinctive roof. With the 982 Spyder's adoption of the same "ears," they constitute a stylistic feature that changes the silhouette of the car for the better IMO and gives all Spyders a very distinctive/aggressive look.

Didn’t really mean to offend anyone with the ears comment. I very much prefer the flying buttresses of my 987 Spyder.
Nonetheless I’m on the short list for a new Spyder. Although when I saw a picture of the new 911 Turbo Cab’s rakish top I was hoping the new Spyder would also get it. The picture seems to point in that direction.

Lots of banter on the 718 GT4 forum regarding the likelihood of a 3.8 L power kit motor. Surprised it hasn't been popping up on this forum. Are people on this form still convinced of a 4 liter motor in one form or another?

I think general consensus is indeed powerkit motor. Makes sense from cost perspective. With headers and tune that likely still means ~480 horse.. or about 50 above where a modded Spyder would be today. I don't think the extra 50 horsepower is going to be worth anything -- car has plenty today and I feel like most of that power will likely be in higher rpm anyway. I am interested though how the new suspension/design will be. Likely will just keep the one I have though.

My prediction, Power kit 4.0L with 415 Horsepower.

My prediction:
No reduction in weight... Actually heavier. Stroked 3.8 to 4.0 with Powerkit NA putting out 420... Particulate filter will waste some hp... so they need to offset it. Focus instead will be aerodynamics... less drag and more down force... GT4 Suspension, Brakes, Wheels and Tires. Spyder will be more of an upgrade compared to the GT4 (from its previous 981 generation) and it will have a price that will reflect it.

Fine with me if this is the case. 3.8, 4.0...whatever...as long as its NA H6 with a 6MT, I'll be happy. Didn't get an opportunity to spec a 981 Spyder from the factory when it was available, so a 982 with the aforementioned setup would be great for me! GT4 suspension/brakes/wheels/tires etc is just a bonus.
