Base Cayman MT with X73 is definitely a better sports car than the other one. It's is an absolute sweet spot and rare combo.
I have X73 in a 981 Spyder and it gives you some steering feel back that you don't get in 981/991 except GT cars.
Also a low capacity flat 6 is a dream engine. Remember those early low capacity Ferrari V12s? Really need to rev it and that's exactly the character of the car.

Took us more than 6 months to find our 2013 981 S Boxster and now we refuse to part with it... It's a PDK, so I cannot speak on the behalf of the manual transmission...
Ultimately, I would tell him to keep shopping until it's exactly what he wants... He will know and won't second guess himself once when that exhaust note hits his ears every time he starts it up... IMVHO
