Default Anybody use a CTEK MXS 5.0? Or should I just stick with proven 4.3 model?

I'm considering a battery charger/tender, and notice that CTEK has a newer 5.0 model with a few more features. Both have 8 steps with 14.4 / 14.7 / 15.8 V modes, 4.3A output, and can charge 1.2 - 110 Ah (up to 160 Ah for maintenance).

5.0 Specs:
  • CHARGES BATTERIES UP TO 110AH. MAINTAINS LARGER BATTERIES UP TO 160 AH
  • UNIQUE RECONDITIONING MODE
  • BUILT-INTEMPERATURE SENSING CAPABILITIES
  • AGM AND NEW EFB (ENHANCED FLOODED BATTERY) BATTERY CHARGING CAPABILITY
  • 8 STEP CHARGING PROGRAM
  • COMPLETELY SEALED UNIT
  • SPARK PROOF AND REVERSE - POLARITY PROTECTED
  • CLEAN VOLTAGE & CURRENT
  • PREMIUM INPUT AND OUTPUT CABLE WITH ROBUST STRAIN RELIEF
  • 5 YEAR WARRANTY
4.3 specs:
  • Fully automatic charging and maintenance in 8 steps maximizes battery life and performance
  • Numerous accessories simplifies using the same charger for multiple batteries
  • One charger for the car, motorcycle, lawn mower, snowmobile, sump pump and tractor
  • Water-resistant so that the solution could be taken to the problem even if it rains or snows
  • Patented maintenance charge for a unique combination of maximized life and performance
  • Recondition of deep discharged batteries
  • Patented desulphation that extends the battery life
  • No sparks, short-circuit proof and reverse-polarity protected for untroubled usage
  • Automatic detection of end-of-life batteries that eliminates surprises

Buy the one that makes coffee for you in the morning. You've got to be kidding! What do you need all the bells and whistles for?? I assume all you want is to maintain your battery during periods of down time for your car. Get the least expensive one that does just that. Mine is a Battery Tender that I bought ~ ten years ago for ~$50 and it's working just fine on my 911 GTS right now .

I have the 4.3. I used the reconditioning mode the other day on one of my older cars (not a Porsche) because the battery had accidently been allowed to be 100% discharged for over 2 weeks. Came back to life quickly. I like the small battery mode and cold weather mode also. FWIW, Tony Callas from callasrennsport.com also likes the CTEK products and said many electrical and computer related issues that occur on Porsches are due to poor quality trickle or high current battery chargers. Basically, clean controlled power is important when connecting an external electrical power source to your Porsche. YMMV. I stick with CTEK. To your question 5.0 or 4.3? Your choice depending on what you want.

In one garage I have the 5.0. in another one the 4.3. And both cars I have get connected randomly based on where I park them. I never noticed any difference.

I am completely happy with my 4.3 and see no needs to upgrade to 5.0.

FWIW, I've been using the CTEK 3300 models for years. No problems.

I had that one. It's ok, but I prefer the one that takes care of you on Friday night when your lady has a headache.
