The mid-engine cars are definitely complimentary to the rear-engine 911. They are both very charismatic in their own way IMO. I'd love to add an air cooled car at some point as well as a 356. Just need more money and room...

Now that I’ve had the 997 for a few months, I have discovered that even with the PS9 suspension installed by the previous owner, I can’t carry near as much pace through turns as I can do in the stock Spyder. Having said that, I really enjoy this 997 as a DD. I picked it up for only $21k. It has 100k miles but is in great cosmetic and mechanical condition, I don’t worry so much about some dingbat running into me as I do every time I drive the Spyder.

Now that's a good idea Mark - you got me thinking. A $21K "beater" 997 to tool around in. That's a massive about of car for the money. And it seems like Porsche's hit the 100K mileage mark in stride. Your purchase gets one into a P-car as a daily driver but it's not so critical if you get a door ding from some idiot in a parking lot Vs. the Spyder or 993.

Hmmm...

The mid-engine driving experience has ruined it for the 911, for me. I'm on the list for a GT3 touring, but besides that, any normal 911 with either 7MT or PDK..... meh.

Every time I drive the Spyder (such as today) it's like I can't believe all over again how it does what it does. Absolutely amazing. And that's coming from someone who knows what a Porsche is, having owned many 911 variants over the past 30 years.

Is the 981 Spyder possibly the greatest value car Porsche has ever sold ???

I believe it may be :-)

I think X73 has quite a bit to do with this.

Maybe, although I think the 987 Spyder was a better value. Matter of opinion and just splitting hairs.

I'd say there's some truth to that, Shaun, at least in recent history, although, I have to admit, I questioned at the time of purchase whether I was crazy for spending close to six-figures on this car.

"$96K for a Boxster?" my friends would scoff. "Are you nuts?"

Ha! They aren't scoffing now. In hindsight, getting a special limited-production car from Porsche with these looks, making these sounds, with this engine, this suspension, and this level of handling -- all at a base price of $82K -- does, indeed, seem like the P-car buy of the decade.

Spoken like a true 987 owner! Damn, you guys are fiercely loyal to your cars

Something tells me the 982 Spyder might not share the moniker of "great value," which can be applied to the 987 and 981 cars, but we will see. Plan to dig deep in the wallet for the privilege of 982 ownership is my guess, and then look to raid the kids' college fund if it is a GT offering.

Bought a 997.2 Carrera and also bought a 987 Cayman S less than a year later. Both used and both fun cars, but prefer pushing the Cayman to its limits at the track.

Yeah both 987 and us 981 Spyder owners are a bit crazy for our cars !!
Both bargain motors for the smiles they bring, but deliver those smiles in different ways.

I wouldn’t want to swap mine for a 987, but fully understand why others wouldn’t want a 981 over a 987.

Both great cars that fit slightly different driver/owner types.

All power to the Spyder Collective :-)

I never seriously considered a Spyder, though the first Boxster I found locally was a 987 Spyder. CliffsNotes explanation of "fit slightly different driver/owner types"?

The Cayman GTS comes with PDK although I wouldn't have minded if it came with M/T. But where I'm from, unfortunately, Porsche doesn't import M/T cars unless probably a custom order. I actually sold my 997.2 TTS not long ago to create space for a new sports car and luckily, the GTS came to my radar less than a month after.

But I guess there are a few creature comforts I'll miss though like the 991.2's more modern steering wheel, park assist/backup camera (strange why our local Porsche importer skipped this feature in 981 Boxter/Caymans, no camera even with 991.1 CS), and power/memory seats. But I can't complain as the GTS costs practically half the 991.2 CS's value where I'm from.

Thanks again for all the positive comments!

Congrats on the new Cayman! When you have a chance post up some pictures.
