PCA, Rennlist, and the 718
I joined the PCA as a new 718 owner, and after all the negative comments by PCA members and many on this forum, I am wondering why would a 718 owner expect any benefit from joining PCA?

Welcome to the club... when I joined in 1971 many of the members didn't recognize the 914 as a legitimate Porsche, which made beating 911's in autocrosses that much sweeter. Many didn't even want us as members! You'll find people who like your car no matter how many cylinders it has.

Despite the negative comments, there are still many PCA members (myself included) who think the 718 is a great car. I met a 718 owner at a recent PCA event here in Chicago, and he had already put a new set of wheels, exhaust and tune on the car. I thought it looked, sounded and drove great. I think there are members of every car club who feel strongly for/against all kinds of cars...I wouldn't really pay them any mind. I suspect they are far outnumbered by those who appreciate all kinds of cars.

718 hate
I was a PCA member in the late '80's through 1992. I autocrossed both 911s and 944s and I just don't remember all the bashing of other members' cars.
Maybe its because we owned the cars for the thrill of driving them instead of some social status.

All good PCA experiences here too. 17 years in, lots of social, DE, Club Racing, Parade, even a concours. Just returned from the PCA fall driving tour to Lake of the Ozarks with 100 folks and 50 cars, a number or which were 718's. All welcomed and great camaraderie.
I wouldn't worry about it at all. Join and explore. Many good friends through PCA for us.

The monthly magazine Panorama by itself is worth the dues IMO. Great pics, still printed on high quality paper.
Your region matters, but most have at least some things to do throughout the year and our experiences have been uniformly positive with the people involved.
And if you like the car, who cares what comments appear?
Go over to the 991 thread and see how the 991.2 is an abomination to so many "NA" fans.

I'm sure it doesn't feel good to read all the venom online regarding the 718. But the same people who are such opinionated a-holes online are probably perfectly nice in person, and will probably like your car once they get over their defensiveness about the 981s. It's the autonomy thing online......

If you were reading the other thread where I am messing with the guy from the land down under.... Ignore all that... I had 914s for many years and the 911 guys snubbed them, now I have a 981 spyder which clearly is a better car than most 911s, the 911 guys don't like that either. There are lots of guys like that in PCA. Ignore them. The best thing about PCA over all these years is Panorama Magazine. Lots to learn in there. There is also track events, autocross, car shows and stuff like that. You will meet people you like. Think of it like High School in the suburbs. Whatever your experience was with that... My friends and I were the cool kids (but nobody else knew).

I am also wondering whether there will be any benefits for me to join PCA. My needs are very limited because I have ZERO interest in autocross or HPDE (had autocrossed a heavily modified Miata and later a Formula Ford with SCCA for a dozen years with 7 of those at the national level but completely retired 4 years ago) and would like to avoid a full-day event in weekends because I want to spend time with my dog. However, as a new Porsche owner, I would like to meet other owners so that I can learn more about the cars. Is there a room in the club for someone like me?

PCA
I joined PCA shortly after purchasing my 718 and received two editions of Panorama. The only information I saw about the 718s were in Porsche adds. I attended one PCA meeting and the conversations were almost exclusively about old models. I have owned many of those older Porsches and
"been there,done that".

Nothing wrong with ANY P car you own and enjoy. I think it has more to do with the PCA itself. I have been a member for several years and can tell you my region at least is a old guys club its so clickie, I rarely go to meetings

There are reasons not to join PCA, but worrying about what others think about your car is certainly not one of them.

I am one of the guys who has expressed a little disappointment with the 4 cylinder 718 (specifically turbo lag) vs. the previous version 981. That doesn't mean that I don't appreciate the 718's great looks, increased hp and more usable torque curve, and creature comforts like blind spot detection. It's a fast car, and I have enjoyed driving it on the street and autocross course. Like most car nuts, there are very few cars that I don't like, and NO Porsche's that I don't like.
I think you would derive benefit from joining PCA. I get a 10% discount on service at my local Porsche dealer (granted their service is marked up about 40%, but every bit helps), I like Panorama magazine, and I love my local chapter's (NNJR) monthly publication Porscheforus.
I think PCA membership is a no-brainer no matter which Porsche you drive.
