Spyders for sale... 981 Vs. 987.2
Just checking out Cars.com and count 14 - 981 Spyders for sale Vs. a lowly 1 - 987.2. The Gen 1's are getting rarer and rarer. That being the case we should see a price jump sometime in the future, right?

Not sure I would draw a correlation to what's for sale vs not. You have some 981's being sold because the owners had basically driven a car free for two years selling at MSRP or better hard to resist. A very good friend of my in the car business had a meeting with a Porsche executive very high in the org will not mention his name told my buddy go buy a 981 and keep it and smiled. My buddy has a unlimited check book when it comes to cars so interesting. I will keep mine not because of that but I love the car, and the engine most of all.

I count five on Cars.com right now, all with PDK. The only manual showing was advertised on here over a year ago and is now sold.

It just depends on demand. I have talked to many people about this topic over the past 7 years and there are lots of interested buyers on the sideline waiting for the prices to come down. Many of those buyers realized that prices aren't coming down any further and have since pulled the trigger. Others remain on the sideline so there's definitely some demand out there but are they willing to spend more?
I do think prices will eventually go up but it could take a couple more years to really gain traction and of course the economy will play a role in that too.
I could test the market by putting mine up for sale at MSRP but then if someone bites I would have to sell. No thanks.

I own a 987.2 Boxster S and I've almost jumped on the several 987.2 Spyders that have been for sale over the past several months. The main reason for not doing so have been that the cars are going for 50% more than my car and I don't think I would get 50% more satisfaction over the S. I know this isn't quite a logical rationale but I'm rarely logical when it comes to these cars. The engine is essentially the same as mine with a more free flowing exhaust. It may not handle as well as a Spyder but at least I can put up my top without getting out of the car.
Now the 981 Spyder has the 911S engine which makes it very special. For me, I am going to wait for the next Spyder with the hope that it will retain the NA 911 engine. That way, I can order it exactly the way I want it. Its a gamble and if it doesn't play out, there are plenty of 981 Spyders out there.
Another thought is to keep the 987.2 Boxster S and order a 991.2 Carrera. The 911 tends to get under my skin and they are so good these days.

There's not a lot of these cars in existence, and with the direction modern cars are going (Porsche included), they will continue to hold value. This is regardless if Porsche makes a 718 with a NA flat six or not.
As someone else said -- buy it and keep it. You will have a very enjoyable car. My thought is that if I start putting too many miles on a car, that means I need more cars.

I'm on record for believing 987 Spyders are a screaming buy. We saw some decent results last month with those sold on BAT, but I'm thinking there's room to run. I still say the right car should fetch 70.

I mean to be fair, I'm a car guy and want to drive everything I have available to me That said, I also sold my M4 to buy a Spyder..... My M4 was a convertible 6 speed manual. Great car, don't get me wrong, and with DCT it would have probably been an excellent daily. However, that wasn't the use case for me and the Spyder is a much better fit. Wife might pick up a CPO M3 to replace her 335 lease that's ending this May though.

The 981 Spyder is a keeper IMHO. I'm selling one only because I have two. BTW it has not sold yet but it's here exclusively on RL and I do get PMs weekly on it. I'm dragging my feet on a quick sale because frankly the car is really amazing and it's hard to put a price on amazing. I can't imagine having to sell if I had only ONE 981 Spyder. You poor souls LOL.
