Spyders for sale... 981 Vs. 987.2
#16
The 981 Spyder is a keeper IMHO. I'm selling one only because I have two. BTW it has not sold yet but it's here exclusively on RL and I do get PMs weekly on it. I'm dragging my feet on a quick sale because frankly the car is really amazing and it's hard to put a price on amazing. I can't imagine having to sell if I had only ONE 981 Spyder. You poor souls LOL.

Is it possible that a 987 Spyder is worth more than a 981 Spyder or GT4 in 5-10 years?
I am interested in your opinions.

Difficult to say. The 981 has clearly the bonus of the strong 3.8l engine and is certainly much faster than the 987. However, the 987 Spyder is (i) rarer (ii) lighter and (iii) more particular with its completely non-sense sunroof (which I love so much). What will be key: How is the 718 Spyder comparing to the 981 Spyder: If the 718 gets a (possibly detuned) 4.0 NA engine, the magic of the 981 might fade a bit and the prices for the 987 and 981 will likely converge. In any event: Both, the 987 and the 981 Spyder are VERY SPECIAL cars, let's enjoy every minute we have with them...!

Time only tells, and the key is the drive the cars and have fun and don't care about value. I will just comment a Porsche executive at dinner to another car executive said if you don't have a 981 buy one it will be a collector. I will leave names out, but any whoo enjoy them.

Both the 987 and 981 Sypder are beautiful. The 987 is rarer as noted and much more analogue and "old school". The orignal unless you go back to the 550.
987 is definitely rare. Hard to find one for sale especially with MT and especially with MT and carbon buckets.
I love mine.

The 987.2 is a screaming deal at today's prices. It's a perfect car and seeped deep in Porsche lore...Light, agile, adequately powered. Mix them all together and you've got a grand slam. No better sports car on the market that gives so much with so little. Spectacular car!
Values are climbing, and there will come a time, in the not to distant future when the prices for these will spike. Think RSA, same deal there, limited supply for a factory (2 year only) special. Limited VIN always equals high price eventually.

981 Spyder - $83,095 - 991 GT3 was ~$131k.
718 Spyder/GT4 - Unknown -- but my guess is ~$95k-$100k. GT3 is $143k.
FWIW, I bought the 981 because I did not feel the 987.2 was adequately powered. I think more power would not improve the car at the point it's at presently (which is why I haven't bothered to tune it, though i'll probably add exhaust for noise). Either way, buyers will have three rare options to choose from, all with their own identity, and for that reason, I think prices will remain pretty close to original sticker. Different tastes will result in enough demand for each model.
That said, what does seem to make the 987.2 Spyder more of a rare find, would be one bundled with MT. Most were PDK I think?

They stopped offering PDK in spyders and sticker for PDK was higher than MT. Seems if they were selling more they would not have discontinued it. As time passes and more cars are lost to attrition, I'm hoping the PDK will hold it's own place. However, as many others have pointed out the car isn't a stock investment, it's for the joy of driving. I can't drive MT anymore or that likely would have been my choice, in it's absence I have come to enjoy PDK which is superior to tiptronic.

The top is really no big deal. The fact that it's manual makes the overall car lighter, and truthfully, I rarely take it off anyway, and I live in So Cal. The design makes it feel like the top is virtually off anyway, with the windows down and back strip-panel removed. It's an incredible piece of engineering, and I think this adds to the uniqueness of this version.
I do understand and respect that many prefer the ease of a button. The 981 offers that and other more modern conveniences that the stripped 987 doesn't. To each their own

There was a 987.2 Spyder for sale here in Scottsdale -- GR again -- with 72,000 miles. Asking was high I think but man it's tempting to buy and drop a 4.2 in it or something
Haven't tried to drop the top on a 987.2, but the top on the 981 feels very light. Looks like the '11/'12 top weighed only 13 lb... don't think our 981 top is that light. If I had to guess probably closer to ~25.
