Default What are your winter cars?

My only car right now is the 981S (wife has an Audi A3 2.0T AWD). It is going to get cold soon, and I'm in an area that gets at least 2-3 good snow storms per year (4-8" per, sometimes more). Have thought about snow tires for the CS, but it seems that a Subaru or some sort of other cheap car might make more sense for many reasons. In an ideal world I'd get another B8.5 S4, but I don't want my 3-4 months per year car to cost $30k ideally. What do you guys do?

Subaru option is a good one. Ours is 2006 and still running strong. Cheap to repair too.

2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with 35" tires. Actually not great in snow due to 4x4 and wide tires, but I'm only driving around town and the clearance is nice. I'd take any Subaru or one of my previous Audis, but Jeep also functions as a family beach vehicle in summer.

What Subaru model to you have, Pep!RRRR? The only problem is the infinite residuals! They seem to be worth 80% of MSRP years later (at least WRX's do).

I have a 2017 Subie Impreza as a DD and winter beater. Really impressive $25K car and I'll likely be dead before it is.

That's on the short list. CVT or manual? Seems like I could pay $20k new for a stripped one (it's just for winter anyway, I don't need sat nav and a bunch of extra) and sell it for $15k in a few years pretty easy.

AWD Escape, the old, looks like a truck not a Tylenol version.

My 2013 BMW x3 3.5i is my everyday car, and my wife's is a 2016 BMW 340i x-drive. She won't switch with me Both cars are terrific in snow).

Ours is actually a Saabaru--really an Impreza, but badged as a Saab back when GM owned a stake in both companies.

I'd definitely look for a manual tranny. Ours is excellent and fun. Plus you may get a better deal.

I am in similar boat and thinking Mini. They are a blast to drive and cheap to fix. They are a lot of fun and cheap to buy too.

CVT - wife can't drive stick and my 718BS is a MT. The redesigned 2017 Impreza is a real improvement dynamically and in NVH over the earlier years.

Can't really go wrong with a Subaru...Had a 2013 WRX in Cleveland and it was a monster in the snow (with snow tires)

These days, I daily drive a BMW 428 with xDrive. When the snow is really heavy on the ground, I take the Grand Cherokee (wife's car). If all else fails, I have my company rent me a Tahoe lol. Cayman goes into the garage from Thanksgiving-March, but I suppose with snow tires it could would be manageable.

My vote swings to Subaru or a Wrangler. My 98 Wrangler is unstoppable in the snow with snow tires. Didn't even need chains up in Flag.

Thanks guys. Any thoughts on impreza vs. crosstrek? I'm no expert, but it looks like they're basically the same thing with the tradeoff being a few mpg and a few grand versus ground clearance and storage. The 981S will still be my daily when it's decent weather.

For us, the Boxster GTS is the winter car.
It's too hot in the summer to put the top down.
