Porsche's make plenty fine winter cars, with proper winter tires...
My old 944 with Blizzaks would climb trees. The 968 wore snows even as a fully caged E-Stock car. Both those cars made heat fast, had heated outside mirrors, and self-clearing rear hatch glass when driven over about 50 mph. Great design, that.
The Boxster S is even nicer, with it's heated seats and such.
Yup. I like driving it every single day. If it's mildly above freezing, the top is likely down too :-)
I had and loved a E46 for many years, but ultimately sold it when it got to ~200k miles and became a PITA to keep running. Are lower mile examples still viable DD's (sounds like yes)?
Well we don't drive that far, so it is for us. we bought it a few years ago with over 60K on the odometer ,car hasn't broken 90k yet. love that car for some odd reason.
I have a 2010 Volvo S40 AWD with a 2.5L five cylinder. This car goes through most anything and is as reliable as a nail. It has ~230 HP and as an "R Design", handles pretty good on Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires.
My winter car is a 996 C2, and was a Boxster S before that, and an 88 C2 911 before that. I've had a Mini Cooper S with snow tires as well, but around the Chicago, they plow pretty often, so I never have trouble with snow unless it exceeds 6" in these cars. It only snows that much only 2-10 times per year, so a 3rd car for that purposes could cost me $1,000-$2,000 per snow event. I could take an Uber for about 1/100th of the cost.

It was a national concours winner that sat next to me at a "prep your car for winter storage" event and said "these are the last cars you have to pack away during the snow, they are so well-galvanized, people can just drive them"

Plowing through snow on winter tires in my lovely 987S, baby!
My DD is a 2015 V60. I did run it through snow when we lived in KC and I was very surprised at how well it handled it. I've been driving through snow since I was 15 (grew up in Upstate NY) so I have had plenty of experience. Probably one of the best cars I've driven in the snow, considering it's Swedish I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Volvo resale values are awful so it might be worth checking out the used market for one.
