engine noise on cold start - 3.4L 981S
Upon most cold starts, my engine has begun making a pronounced "ticking" noise most audible from the side intake on the driver side; it varies with RPM and generally dissipates after 5 minutes or so. In the old days, I'd have described the sound as likely worn lifters or a valve issue.
The car has only 24,000 miles, with oil changes at 2K, 5K and every 5K thereafter. Any ideas - loose exhaust manifold, perhaps? I'm taking it to the dreaded dealer next week to be checked out, but wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue.

There are tons of threads on this on RL and planet 9. The engine has a very loud valvetrain, and 95% of the time it's nothing. Check for leaves in the intakes on the side, as those can cause this, although it likely wouldn't be RPM dependent then. My car ticks too, and always has. Good luck.

Could be lifter noise, especially if the car has sat for a while. Usually can get that to stop by a short throttle blip. My car does not get driven every day and it is not uncommon to hear lifter noise at startup. My Porsche service rep assures me it is nothing to worry about - they do that.

Yep, there are other things, but if you blip the throttle and it goes away, chances are it was a hydraulic lifter not quite full of oil. Blipping momentarily increases oil pressure to more quickly fill the chamber, so can help identify the source of the noise.

My never did it, then started early this year when it was cold, but has since stopped. Nothing to worry about.
