Default 2019 718 Spyder OR 2018 991.2 GT3

So... I have a 991 GT3 now - love it - hands down best car I've had and I don't track it much. It's just a ball of fun!

However; I'm looking forward at the next car (aren't we all?) and have really fallen in love with the 2016 Spyders you guys have.

My sales guy has told me I can get a manual GT3 early in 2018 OR they expect to see the next iteration of the Sypder on a NA 718 platform in summer/fall of 2018 (a few months later)

So, opinions please - which would you go for and why?

I'd go for a GT3 and would track it. Otherwise not much point IMHO.

Get both

Keep the one you like

Neither will depreciate

You're talking apples and oranges. I don't think there would be many cross shoppers between these two vehicles. I guess it really depends on what you'll be using it for. If you just want something different, go with the Spyder. You cannot really go wrong with either one.

I would agree that it really depends on intended use. Where do you typically drive your GT3 now and what aspects do you really like about it?

I contemplate making the switch to a GT3 and the 991.2 GT3 performance figures makes a compelling case but the reality is that my primary use is in the mountains and I have no need for additional power, handling and overall speed, my 2011 Spyder offers plenty with a huge dose of driver feedback. My decision.....buy a used GT3 after the kids are out of college so I don't have to give up the Spyder.

It's used now for mostly weekend runs in the mountains. Love the feel from the car, the sound and the "raw" nature of it. I love convertibles though (used to have a 991 GTS cab) and see the Spyder as a great mountains (or canyons on west coast) car that also is a great "feel" car.

I realize the cars are fairly different - just wasn't sure how many guys in this forum have had both and can compare them.

Find a low/no miles 2016 Spyder instead. The engine makes the car fast enough, sound intense, and it's a guaranteed future classic collector car imho.

Can your dealer give you any more info on the upcoming 718 "N/A" Spyder? The 981 Spyder is Sublime. I might get a .2 GT3 but I wouldn't sell my Spyder for it.

I really enjoy the Spyder on the street, especially on tighter back-roads. I suspect they will limit the next Spyder with tall gearing again- if they didn't there would be little incentive to step up to something more expensive. However depending on how you use the car that might be fine. If freeway Gs and on-ramps are your thing the GT3 might be tough to get over, but if you enjoy tighter twisties the smaller, more approachable, lower limits Spyder could be just the ticket.

Given your current GT3 and street usage I'd personally give the Spyder a shot to mix things up and explore a new experience. You can always go back, but many who try the Spyder find it surprisingly special.

I've got an '18 GT3 on order and just gave up a GT4. For my preferred style of street driving I'd walk past the 4, and it'd be a tough call between the 3 and the Spyder. Cost no object...

...and as John Ferguson said you can't beat top down motoring. The sound is even better with the top down of course and the lines of the car are even better.

I'd go with a known entity. Either the current Spyder or the GT3.
Not even the cleaning lady knows specifics about the next Spyder (if there is one).

I would vote for the 982 Spyder. Yes, it is coming; and, will be NA (my prediction).

As other, more informed members commented, a MT GT3 would be a great drive. Since you aren't tracking, the Spyder will out-fun the GT3 on the streets and mountains! Imagine driving with the top down, hammering through the gears near redline (at least in first two or three), and the incredible NA sound reverberating off the mountains/canyons, wind blowing over the head, nice warm sun on your face! One word: Priceless! Yes, GT3 could do all of that with one notable exception: top is fixed! Even with the windows down, the experience is muted. Open top driving is the ultimate expression on four wheels. Well, you know that from your Cab days. The Spyder dials all of that up a few notches.

Ideal scenario would be to get both. If that's not an option, go with the Spyder. You will love it!
