Smart people don't ***-u-me a car is coming (and when), and its specs, until the manufacturer has spoken. And even then, sometimes things change (usually timelines). Having said that, a GT3 with manual transmission and more creature comforts are confirmed, so if you're a 911 guy, and plan to track the car in the future, AND have an MSRP allocation, AND don't want to wait an extra year to see if a Spyder even materializes, go for that one.

I'm a bit surprised that some of you doubt there will be a next Spyder, especially after the popularity of the 981 Spyder. To quote Porsche "The Spyder will be a regular production vehicle" and thus far it has proven true. This statement was made back in 2010 when the Spyder was introduced.

To the OP, if you're using the car on mountain roads and you like convertibles I think the Spyder is far better suited and will be more enjoyable. It's not as edgy or raw but it is still very capable with the added benefit of being a drop top.

So, I'm no cleaning lady - but I don't doubt there is a new spyder coming. I just did European Delivery and several people at both factories mentioned it (as well as my local USA dealer). Now, as to specs and timing - who knows for sure.

That said - thanks so much everyone -

1. I think I'm convinced to start the search for a current 981 Spyder - if you know of any - let me know (LWB's are a must).
2. Any clue how many were made? Seems like a very rare car (for a non numbered car)....( over 120 991.1 GT3s listed on autotrader nationwide vs 15 981 spyders is somewhat of an indication of rarity)

I'm aware of an immaculate Spyder that will be coming up for sale in the next week or two, please PM me for details. It's Silver and has buckets and all the right options IMHO.

I believe something like 800 Spyders came to the US.

I swapped my 991 GT3 for a 981 Spyder just over a year ago. Plus points are drop top obviously, sound except 8-9k. Handling is arguably better than GT3 because of the mid engine, smaller and less sticky tyres. Also I think the 981 Spyder is the lightest car Porsche makes and has done for quite a while. Rotating and unsprung mass is also a fair bit lower than GT3 as wheels are very light and PCCBs quite a bit smaller (but easily good enough). Almost forgot - an amazing MT!

But GT3 has better steering and that counts for a lot to me. Plus it's much faster, revs to 9k and is a 911.

Looks wise the GT3 wins for me. The Spyder looks great for a Boxster. I get a lot of compliments in it. In an ideal world you need a Spyder and an RS I would say!!

I had both a 2014 GT3 and a 2011 Spyder.

I sold the GT3 because I found the Spyder more fun to drive on the street. Unfortunately there are no tracks (or corners or hills either) near where I live so the GT3's fun factor was unrealized for me other than the occasional run to 9000 rpm.

If the new Spyder has the right NA motor, manual option, body styling and the auto insulated top I will likely upgrade. I am also open to the idea of a special NA 911 cabriolet or Speedster if it were to happen.

After recently buying a used 2014 911S cabriolet, I have come to realize that the convenience of a push button up or down top is paramount to enjoying the top down experience in the most spontaneous manner possible.

A convertible adds a whole new dimension of fun beyond just going fast or finding the apex at speed.

If they could get the 4.0 in the 718 Spyder, then I'd bite. Or how about lighten it up a bit with a carbon frame or panels. I don't know if the the 981 Spyder can be topped imho.

Shorten the 1-4 gearing, simplify the over complicated top (KISS), add revs, improve near limit feedback. More progressive over limit behavior. Optional M030 (stiffer suspension with adjustable sway bars) would be nice to have as well.

They left room- it's an excellent car but Porsche knows their market- it's not "too good".

On your question about the overall production numbers for 981 Spyders:
According to PAG 2486 Spyder (981) including all pre-series were build worldwide. The Spyder Database on Rennlist shows app. 849 identified Spyder for North America (US & CA).

you already have a 991 GT3, so i wouldnt bother with another 991 GT3 regardless of transmission.

The Spyder is really nice, but I am not sure if i would step down from a GT3 to a Spyder. i would miss the redline of the GT3.

Don't wait.
Find a 981 spyder now.
Other than gear ratios, what could Porsche do to the next generation that would really make the experience better?

I've been toying around with the idea of trading my 981CS in for a 2016 Spyder. I do like top-down motoring, but the inconvenience of having to get out and drop the top, lift the rear lid, etc seams a bit of a hassle (I've had a few cabs, and it's nice to drop the top on the fly). Any current spyder owners want to comment?

In terms of improving the experience, it would certainly be cool if the rumored 982 spyder had the 4.0L NA engine, top straps that help up at track speeds, AND an automated, insulated drop top that can be operated on the fly.

981 Spyder owner here. I prefer the manual roof as it adds a sense of occasion. I dream I'm in a 1960s Lotus. Note that I'm also the kind of guy that ordered stereo delete .

Also it looks cooler and not like a normal Boxster, goes well with the streamliners and the lack of insulation helps you enjoy the sound and it isn't cold or anything.

Each successive model is almost always better than the predecessor. There can be exceptions! As Petevb pointed out above, there are # of ways the Spyder can be improved, for the street-driving. I have no doubt that the 982 will be better than 981, quantitatively and intangibly.

As for the top, it "needs" to remain a manual affair! I am sure many fellow Spyder drivers will agree. There are certain design signatures, one of which is manual top. I will "not" want an automated top! Thankfully, Porsche seems to think so as well. And, 981's top seems well insulated, contrary to Porsche's claim (and, unlike 987's). It is pretty easy to operate; of course, not as easy as pressing a button!
