Default 718 Rear License Plate Mounting

I am curious about the large diameter hole where the rear license plate would be located. What is it for? Instead of drilling holes in the typical location has anyone attempted to use it for mounting a license plate bracket?

That's where you thread in the tow hook.

I'm not sure if anyone makes a rear mounted plate holder using the tow hook. Seems like it could be possible but I'm not sure why it would be worthwhile using it since everyone needs a rear plate and it's not an eyesore like it is on the front bumper.

Default tow hook license plate brackets

I've used one of these on my Cayenne for the front license plate. The link is for front tow hook bracket. I'm guessing (emphasis on "guessing") that could also be used for rear tow hook attachment point as the bracket is very adjustable.

it serves 2 purposes .......you insert the wind-up key there and/or the hand crank to clear cylinders so no smoke on start up

The license plate holders that use the tow hook for attachment, IMHO, typically look like crap. I believe you are better off to drill the plastic bumper where it is dimpled and attach the frame securely so it is straight and be done with it.

I never use to run a front plate, but since the cops are clawing for money these days they have begun to issue front license plate tickets. Before they could extract any money from me I installed front plates on both my cars. I don't like them, but not much I can do. Definitely not going to be donating any of my money or giving the cops a reason to stop me and look at my car.

If the 718's are coming through with "license plate holders" minus the screw holes, wouldn't the dealer just automatically drill them as a rear plate is required in all states. In the US, the 981 came through with a border built into the rear bumper that framed the plate. I would be very unhappy with the 718 setup. Another benefit of living in PA is we have no front plate requirement!
