So I decided to go ahead and change my filter after seeing this thread and I have to say that I waited too long. I inspected the filter regularly as part of my maintenance but taking the cover off and looking at the filter doesn't tell the whole story. The side facing into the intake port is what sees most of the sand and when I pulled mine out and looked at the back I realized I should have done it 5000 miles ago.

It's done now, below is the before and after

Any videos on how to replacing the air filter on the new Spyder?

I've seen a you tube video on a thread here somewhere (maybe the modification thread?) showing how to get to the engine cover on the 981 Spyder. Looks time consuming but not real hard- need to do it sometime. Would like to see the top of the engine and could clean the air cleaner while there.

A you-tube search may find it.


(and I thought engine access was tough on the 914- at least you can see it!)

Just changed oil today on the Spyder. The lift sure makes it easier!!

^^^^Love the lift! That's the one thing I miss about our last house, we had super high ceilings in the garage and a 4 post lift so I could easily do my own oil changes and undercarriage work. A Trade off for the sun and beautiful weather of California I guess.

As far as maintenance on the 987 Spyder, access to the top of the engine is trivial and takes very little time. No top to worry about and basically a few trim pieces that come out without tools.

I put in a maxjax

Its high enough. I did put on an extra set of 10' hoses so I could run them up and along the ceiling so they are out of the way.

to change the air filters on the 2016 spyder

open rear trunk
pop off plastic covers on struts
pull down carpet
remove black plastic thing for making the carpet look nice
remove bolts that hold computer in place do not remove computer just move it out of the way
remove screw that holds in right air cleaner housing
pull out
unscrew filter from frame
screw on new filter
replace
repeat on left side of car
put everything back

So the new Spyder has two separate air filters? Do the air filters actually sit outside of the engine bay?

For reference on the 987 you need to remove the aluminum cover which is held in with 5 torx screws and the air filter box sits on the drivers side just under the cover.

on the 981 you change the air filters from inside the rear trunk. No need to remove the engine cover.

when I eventually do take off the engine cover, I will redirect the air/oil bs and vent my crankcase into the open atmosphere like God intended.

That definitely makes it easier to change and realistically there isn't much else to access in the engine bay from the top other than coolant which is a once every 5 year requirement.

I had read one of the GT4 guys had done similar. Has there been any follow up to see how much oil is actually being exhausted from the separator? It could get messy unless there's another way to capture the oil?

I had a vented catch can on my 914-6 and never had anything in the can. Some people I know that ran that same motor (Carrera 3.2) on the track would get oil in theirs, but I never tracked my car.

There is an explaination how to do that oil vent mod on the Spyder/GT4 on the Spyder mod thread- it's a long thread but in there somewhere.
