Default 718 Boxster Spyder predictions.......

Hello Gents,

So, I have always been a Boxster Spyder fan. almost picked up a 981 Spyder a year ago. now focusing on the 718 Spyder. I know its still way to early to judge, specially since the GTS is yet to be unveiled.

Now that the 718 is running a 4cylinder turbo charged, what will the Spyder run? 4.0 detuned from the GT3? Predictions please.......

Also, I believe they are already testing the 718 Boxster GTS, so unveiling will be soon. When will the Spyder be unveiled?

thx!

PS: Who here with photoshop skills can attempt to render the Spyders double rear lid bubbles on the 718's rear end? that would be awesome to see.....

I predict there are multiple other threads on this topic, though I'll also concede that it's one I'm curious about as well.

Porsche needs to boost sales of the 718 platform which is apparently off to a slow start. Therefore it would be ludicrous from a business standpoint for Porsche to offer the 718 Spyder with a NA 6 cylinder engine. It would be like Porsche telling prospective 718 buyers that the turbo 4 engine is a POS.

On the other hand, launching a "halo" Porsche with turbo 4 could certainly help enhance the 718 image and boost sales.

There's been a lot of speculation thrown around about the 718 Spyder but the only business case I can see for Porsche offering a 718 Spyder with a flat 6 is if they are either going to end the 718 platform all together or offer the 718 with the option of a flat 6 again.

They can't do that either because a turbo 6 would cut into the 911, and going back to all NA flat-6ens for the Boxster/Cayman would make the 911 less attractive.

Of course we cannot predict what will happen when the government fuel consumption tests get updated and might invalidate some of the need for a turbo.

I think the Spyder will follow closely with the next GT4. Similar engines, transmissions and other major hardware.

Porsche has never launched a GT Convertible. Even the highly sought after 911/997 speedster had a standard 997 Carrera engine albeit slightly upturned but still no gt3/gt2.

So at the end of the day, while Porsche could launch a gen 2 718 gt4 with a detuned GT3 engine, using that engine in the 718 Spyder would completely undermine the 718 platform.

Porsche needs to show prospective buyers a compelling reason to buy the 718 despite its turbo 4.

Pure entertainment... Keep them coming.
Facts: 982 GT4 will be NA. More than one Porsche Executive has said so in public and to the press. The 981 GT4 and Spyder shared its non-GT engine. Porsche removed ALL "Boxster/Cayman" badging from the 981 GT4/Spyder for a reason. The previous 987.2 "Cayman R" / "Boxster Spyder" were badged as though.

My Opinion: Based on the above... The 982 Spyder will be badged as "Spyder" with no "718" included... it will continued to have the same engine as the GT4... a non GT NA flat boxer six. Which version... not sure. Maybe a NA version of one of the existing 991.2 3.8 turbo engines?

We have some time though as we are still awaiting the 718 GTS... which will be a Turbo 4 pot. It should debut before the end of the year... Geneva will highlight the new 991.2 GT3... Frankfurt will be something bigger than a GTS. NYIAS? LA is another possible time? Time will tell.

No hard release date but the discussion is for spring of 18. So... pure entertainment as you say. There's even talk of a NA 4.0. Will most likely be, as it's predecessors, a spectacular car.

P.s. I have placed a deposit on a 982 Spyder.

Excuse my ignorance, but how do you do this? A dealer will take a deposit on a model that hasn't been announced? Do they all have shadow allocations for cars that don't exist?

Yes - exactly. They'll take a deposit, refundable, and put you first, second etc... in line for when they receive their allocations. I'm not sure about "shadow" allocations...

I have as well... actually #2 on the list. Someone at my work, who has two 981 Spyders already beat me to the punch. Which is fine, as I'll be targeting PTS again if I jump.

That's cool. I'd love a PTS but am unsure of when and how etc... I take it they're not the first ones off the assembly line, correct? Then there's a "window" that opens?

Then again the agony starts as to which colour! Ieeee....

I have almost ten deposits on cars that don't yet exist.

I don't think they have much choice if they want to charge $$$ for the Spyder, namely the same $$$ as for the GT4. They are gonna have roughly the same engine. And I don't think they are going to make an entirely new engine.

My money is on a 991.2 GT3 engine with maybe a crippled cylinder head.

The key to not making 911 owners jealous of the "cheap" NA flat-6ens is to make GT4 and Spyder as unattractive as it gets to regular car buyers. Limit choices of interiors, maybe even colors, wheels, funky roof on the Spyder, that sort of thing.

Mash: We enjoy indulging in speculations, running through wish lists and general extrapolation of what we already know, with respect to Spyder. The release data isn't far off. We will see GTS this year. The Spyder should be announced by late spring of next year, if not at the Geneva show '18.

If 4.0 engine comes to fruition, expect the interest level to be pretty high. Even 3.8 should attract high degree of demand. The NA for even niche models come be sunset post-982. For Spyder and GT4, there is room for power increments with NA even after 982. It could come down to cost and if GT3 retains NA in 992 (appears doubtful). You could also expect PDK option, if you are into that sort of strange stuff!!
