Hi guys

Its been about five years since I sold my 944 cab, but now I'm back with a beautiful guards red 987.
I'm ecstatic but there is a pain with the joy. I took it for the first open road drive yesterday the noise really bothered me. The tires (Michelins) are quite noisy, on rough tar its real annoying. Then after about an hour my ears actually started to hurt and I realized there is a droning sound from the exhaust between 2- 3000 rpm under light load.

I searched but could not find any threads on this, is this normal, any advice will be appreciated.

Regards
Johan

Sounds like the vehicle may have an aftermarket exhaust, that's the first thing to check. If you look underneath and it's a shiny stainless unit, then it is not OEM.

Yup, almost all aftermarket exhausts drone in the roughly 2-3k RPM range. Remus, Carnewal (modified stock exhaust), and FVD are some of the exceptions. Hope this can help you get to a pleasant ownership experience.

It's still exhaust related unless what you are perceiving is normal, have you driven another for comparison? Are you positive it's all stock? Could it have headers or cat delete?

Are we certain on the exhaust being stock? Because that's why you wouldn't find anything about stock exhaust droning because it doesn't :-).

The stock exhaust is very quiet so you either have a an issue with your current exhaust or there are some aftermarket components as others have mentioned.

Do you have a 987.1 or a 987.2?

Its a 987.1
A friend who knows them well had a look underneath and said everything look standard.
The same friend drive a S, so not the same but we drove them back to back and mine is not any louder but it has the droning sound were as his does not.
I made an appointment at the local dealership -(where I bought it) on Thursday to have it checked.

It's possible a heat shield could be vibrating but I still think it's in the exhaust itself. The droning at that rpm would be absent in both the base and S with stock exhaust.

I agree, I think the exhaust might have a small leak, we'll hopefully know tommorrow.

I had the car at the dealership yesterday, they tell me there's nothing wrong.
They know what sound I'm talking about but that's just how a Boxster sound.

I'm doing a 1500km trip next week, I'll see how that goes. Will take my noise cancelation earphones with.

If this drone you are hearing is still audible with the top down then I have to think they are wrong. Even with my top up, with a stock system there is no drone, particularly something that would require ear plugs. Perhaps you should drive yours then another one off the lot, both times with someone from the dealership to confirm their analysis.
