Default Track tires.

OK, I just came from Mid-Ohio. I have the "new" Michellin PS2's on the C4S. They suck. Softer side walls make for a great street ride, but they really roll over when pushed. It doesn't even require much pushing. I even pumped the tire pressures up to where they get real greasy by the second lap, and they still roll over bad. Granted, I'm running stock camber and could use more negative camber, but they suck nevertheless. Had to drive back home in the middle of the night to pick up my Dunlop SSR's. Great tires, BTW, but no longer being made.

Unfortunately, the 987S comes with these PS2's. Checked Tire Rack, and no R compounds available in the 987S sizes, 235/40-18 and 265/40-18. Anyone using R-compounds on the 987S yet?

C'mon, now. I'm sure I've got fellow track junkies out there scoping out R-compounds for the 987S.

I have been looking a little. i noticed the dunlop ssr and michelin cups had the correct front sizes but only the 265/35 rear. The diameter is 26.3" for the ps2 265/40 and 25.2" for the 265/35. i am not sure this differnce is acceptable. wanted to check it out first. did tirerack say if/when they will get the correct sizes.

OK, after I looked into some of the spec for the tires I prefer (palting, you inspired me) I found the following:

I was thinking of going with the BFGoodrich G-force T/Akd tires in 245/40-18 front (9.8" section vs. 9.5" stock, and 25.7" dia vs. 25.4-25.5" stock) 265,275/40-18 rear (275 have 10.9" section vs. 10.7" stock, 26.7" dia vs. 26.3 stock).

Seems like the differences in size are within an acceptable range. I havent looked at the clearances on the car yet, but I imagine I would have no trouble at all with this setup. I want to try the stock setup to see what kind of under/over steer Im getting first to see if I want to go with the wider sizes front or rear. Id be interested in your thoughts on tire selection also.

Sounds good, Delesh!! It sounds like we've found a choice.

Palting,
Were you at NNJR's Mid Ohio event this past weekend? It was a terrific event (I drove my brother's 914-6).

Regarding tires, does Kuhmo offer the sizes we need for the 987S?

Another option I found that was somewhat close was the Toyo RA-1 in the following sizes:
275/35ZR18 25.55" dia 10.94" section
245/40R18 25.4" dia 9.65" section

These might work and are true DOT R-Compound

Schnell, yes, I was at Mid-Ohio running with the black group on my C4S. Gorgeous days, could not have asked for anything better. We were real lucky. There were several pristine 914's that weekend. What color was your car?

Toyo's are probably better than the G-Force. I"ve heard nothing but praise for the RA-1's. I'll help out and check some, too, when I get home.

Palting,
I've attached a picture of the car I drove at Mid Ohio this past weekend. While I drove in white, my brother (whose car it is) instructed and drove in red.

We couldn't have asked for a better weekend at the track!

Let me know if you sign up for any other NNJR track events...perhaps by then both of us will have our Boxster S's at the track!

I ran the P 0 Corsa on my Boxster S with 18 inch wheels. R compound makes the car come alive. Kuhmo also fit.

Nice. I remember seeing the car.

I plan to go th NNJ events again. This weekend was a blast, lots of track time. NNJR runs it tight, raely an idle track time. I'm sure we'll see each other agaon at Mid-Ohio.

Bob, finding the right sizes may be a problem. Unless you know something we don't.

Palting, not sure if you've switched tires yet, but you might consider the 'other' OEM tire for the Boxster - the Bridgestone S-02A. I just got them for my 986S and they are incredibly nimble. Same compound and tread pattern as the S-03 Pole Position but a stronger and stiffer sidewall. Might be the right combination street/track tire for you.

Thanks. The wheel and tire package I got off e-bay came with those tires. I'll give them a try after I wear out the R-compounds.
