Default Test drove the 718 Cayman GTS today...quick thoughts

In a word (and rather predictably) : Impressive.

The example I drove was the first one at my local dealership...an inventory car with PDK, Sport PASM, Sport Chrono and 18 way seats. All in, the MSRP came out to 97,xxx.

Much like my test drive of the 718 Cayman S recently, the characteristic that stood out the most was the TORQUE. Compared to my car, the mid-range in this car is pretty ridiculous. Although the motor seems happy to spin all the way past 7k, it really does seem to produce the most brutal acceleration between 2-5.5k RPM (much like the 718S). I did not find it to be noticeably quicker than the 718S. The exhaust sounded more or less the same to the 718S, but it does seem to have a bit more of an induction roar than I remember in that car. I prefer driving the car with the PSE off.

The handling was excellent, and I will say that the steering is definitely more satisfying (to me) than my 981GTS. That being said, I find it difficult to determine how much of the handling improvement comes down to the tires (this car is running the Pilot 4S tires, compared to the Pirelli tires on mine).

I am no professional road-tester, just thought I'd share. All in all, a blast to drive...would love to sample one in a 6MT to have a more direct comparison to my car.

That's a bit cruel, I'd just assumed he was waving 'bye-'bye as the 718 left him far behind.

The steering improvement is not the tires, it's the more direct steering ratio. I have it in my Spyder and it's very different than my 981S, and they had the same tires.

Your comment bout the majority of power being evident between 2500 - 5500 RPM matches up with many of the turbo cars I have owned. When on boost there’s nothing like that rush of acceleration. Porsche has dialed out the brick wall that usually comes after 5500 RPM which I have experienced in my turbo cars.

I am curious, is the upgrade in torque and handling enough to consider trading your 981GTS?

Yup, the 991 Turbo rack makes a big difference. My comment about the tires was more in regards to how the car seems to grip mid-corner and how it loses grip.

Nope. Low end torque is great in all cars, but something I value more in my daily drivers. My current daily drivers both deliver reasonable low end shove for day to day use. My Cayman, however, is a weekend toy...winding it out to redline is half of the fun! That being said, a little bit more torque is always welcome, especially given the long gearing in these cars. For that reason, the only car I'd consider trading my 981GTS toward is a naturally aspirated 4.0L 982 Spyder. If a naturally aspirated Spyder doesn't happen (or I can't acquire one), I'll simply send my Cayman down to BGB for a 4.0 X51 conversion and drive it for the rest of my time above ground!
