718 Spyder Undressed
#16
200 miles in my 981 Spyder today. So good in every respect. Think I am finally getting the hang of the gearbox. May have to release the kraken with headers etc now I’ve basically decided it’s a keeper, 4.0 or no 4.0 in the new one.

There’s a bit of a theme appearing here.... Us lucky few who bagged a 981 Spyder are a little smitten with them !
Everytime I drive it I say to myself... I love this car and ask what would I change it for ???
It it looks fantastic, sounds fantastic, drives and goes plenty fast enough for me.
Its perfect (for me) :-)

There's nothing car-wise that makes me happier than all you 981 Spyder owners who think that the 718 Spyder won't be a significant step up. Maybe the dealers will have to sell the new Spyders at MSRP (or even discounted) because they will be so undesirable.

that in the next spy shots we see in place the more
aggressive gt4 front bumper, including the air vent!
The fact that is particular 718 Spyder was fitted
with 'iron' brakes rather than PCCB's gives me
hope this 'mule' was testing just the canvas top
& not the full aero-package for the final version
of the 718 Spyder! Given that Dr. Oliver Blume
told us it will be N/A, it's more than likely that
both the 718 gt4 & Spyder will have the same
high performance engine. And I would hope that
the Spyder version merits the same front end
treatment for that 'performance' potential that
N/A engine will afford both models. If you look
at the back, it's hard to miss the unique & new
center 'outlet' for the under-body aero that has
been designed for both the 718 gt4 & the Spyder!
That rear under-aero* on the Spyder gives me
some confidence that the front bumber will match
that of the 718 gt4!
Regardless, I am 'all-in' on the next 718 Spyder.
Have deposit & a #2 position at my P-dealer!
Hoping for PTS too.

*Visually it could resemble Ferrari's 488 rear-lower aero:

Not sure anyone said it wasn’t desirable, but the question is who wants to upgrade right? I’m a Porsche fan all around, and at this point I see no reason for (me) to sell a car I Iove to drive. It sure one person said don’t buy the 718 Spyder? Don’t you agree all car purchases are subjective to what the potential owner wants? It goes both ways I have sold cars because I didn’t fall in love with what I purchased for various reasons, and wanted the new version. Some are just happy with the 981 which is a good thing, and not knocking the 781.

I decided that I will only buy a sports car that is beautiful in addition to being great to drive.
The 981 Spyder is the most beautiful car I’ve owned. The 718 Boxster and Cayman just don’t do it for me visually, mostly because of the fussy rear.
Agree with others here that 981 Spyder has plenty of power. While more is usually better, all else being equal, I wouldn’t trade a beautiful 981 Spyder for a slightly more powerful but less beautiful 718 Spyder.

I seriously doubt that the bumpers shown on these sets of spy shots are the final design, in fact I would bet money that they aren’t. They will be very similar to the GT4 just like the last go round.

Sure it will look better than the spy shots of the test car. But I bet it’ll have the rear similar to other 718 models, that is, the horizontal band with the embedded PORSCHE logo. That’s what I find most objectionable in the 718 design. The 981 Spyder also has a more pronounced ducktail that’s very curvy and elegant. Looks like the 718 Spyder won’t be as proucouned or as elegant.

Front looks awful but that rear is growing on me a bit, assuming those wheels are gonna be on the car. The back looks kinda mean and the haunches look a little more aggressive that our 981’s. Not digging those red rear reflectors through, and can’t get over that front bumper and headlights.

That front bumper looks fugly...shouldn't find that on any Porsche let alone a Spyder
By deductive reasoning (same rear diffuser & wheels package as the 718 spy photos) I believe that the release version will feature a GT4 style bumper as per the 981 Spyder
Also the bumper doesn't line up too well with the two front side radiators so if the design is by form then it is a complete engineering failure and we know this normally cannot happen with Porsche
If for some absurd reason that it is the actual product then the first mod to do is to swap out that fugly front bumper into a 718 GT4 one

Boxster7 I feel the same way about the first edition. After a while the 944 and 986 both felt like they needed the "search for more power" quest. I've never driven the Spyder and thought it needs more given the current realities of the posted speeds in most states.
