What are you laughing about? Of course it's an investment. Have you ever run a business?

Please read the conversation. The poster just before me made the (generally) very accurate comment that cars are a depreciating asset. This is true even for new car dealerships. We can agree that a car is an asset, but it is (generally) not an investment-grade asset. Sure, a 911 R may be an investment, but not a run of the mill 718.

Whether owned by an individual or a business, a car depreciates and has additional ownership costs above and beyond depreciation, otherwise known as liabilities. This is not characteristic of an investment. Holding an asset almost guaranteed to depreciate while paying associated liabilities is wholly inadvisable (unless you get to drive it!).

And, since you've decided to question my personal credibility, I'm registered with the SEC as an investment advisor and I just sold my first business on September 30th after founding it and running it for 11 years. The firm advised corporate clients on risk management, investment strategy, and employee benefits.

Let's go back to talking about buying cars now, please.

I watched my current car sit on the lot for 4 months. In the first 2 months they declined my offer. Month 3, no activity. Month 4 they posted a new price online below my original offer. I called and offered just below the new price and they accepted... Maybe patience will pay off here too.

You should be able to get a 10% discount plus whatever conquest cash Porsche is offering at best. Think it's $4500 cash on remaining 2017 718s. There may be more cash incentivized from the factory next month since they don't want the older models sitting into 2018.

Thanks, I hadn't even considered conquest money! If the earlier post about -17% was added to $4500 in conquest money, that's getting close to my original offer to them.

This is exactly the kind of info I was hoping to learn from this thread. Thanks again!

Dealers rarely order cars heavily optioned (like mine), and when they do, it's typically because of a pre-sale gone bad. And they typically freak out at the thought of sitting unsold for a long time, like the ones OP pointed out. In my case, I called dealer when 'my' car just arrived, and they offered right off the bat the 10% plus shipping (I never expected that; nobody else discounted even a penny on their GTSs), so closed the deal on the spot, since it was a very reasonable deal. My car didn't have the main GTS option most buyers want (but not me, which is the GTS package. I wanted leather with ventilated seats), so they knew few buyers were going to be interested, and jumped in at the opportunity; I don't drive a hard bargain when a deal is fair. But yes, if you want a stripper, then you need to order one. Dealers order what they think will sell the easiest, and that includes some options. The dealer asking for MSRP when there's a $4,500 rebate lives in a different universe. I wouldn't waste my time on that one, but the other could come to terms soon enough. I don't consider the stock market an investment (more of a gamble), but a car even less. Ha ha. OP is doing the right thing. Most of us work too hard for our money, to just write a check for what a dealer want just because we like it. I would never do that either. Hang in there OP. You'll get a fair offer soon enough. Good luck.

Thanks!!

These actually seem "over-optioned"... I want a lot of options, just not necessarily this exact build.

The build sheet for the older one actually said "Order Type: LF-Stock Vehicle" - so, I assumed the dealer / factory spec'd it. I sort of think the factory spec'd it because the newer one halfway across the country seems almost the exact same specs, but I don't know.

Anyone know what "LF-Stock Vehicle means?

I'm sorry OP, but did you say that you were looking at a 718S with a sticker price of $112k?!

Did the option list include $20,000 worth of gold coins in the trunk?

There's even a $113k MSRP still available. Crazy!

Pretty sure those are "Launch Edition" spec'd from the factory. Quick search shows 3 exact 2017 Miami Blue's available still.

So, I'm currently hunting well-optioned, used 718 S. I'm being very picky. With that said, I found a couple of examples that are close, but not exactly right - and are new.

I've found two cars that are new... but aren't selling. One of the cars has been on the lot for 118 days and the other 182. They're both 2017 MYs while we know the 2018s are already on lots, too. This seems like a terrible situation for the dealer and a good opportunity for the right buyer.

I've contacted both. The one at 118 days is still offering the car at full MSRP (?!) and the 182 day car is going for $105k (down from $112 MSRP).

So, what happens as these sit here longer? What's the best way to get the dealer to drop the price drastically? What other advice would you have for this situation?

Thanks!
I'm not a medical professional, but I'll bet there's a section in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders that matches the symptoms the dealer is exhibiting in his attempt to charge over $100,000 for a four-banger. If you can find that chapter and point it out to the dealer, it may give you a solid basis for negotiation.

Seriously, that's 911 money. Crazy to sell a 718 at that kind of price, even more so to buy it.

I see Larson in Tacoma, WA and Napleton in Westmont, IL. Can you share where the 3rd one is?

EDIT: I think I found it in Austin also listed at $112k.

Thanks!

My god, that's hilarious, almost $50k in options on a 718S.

Leather door sills, $530 key/pouch, leather steering column and sun visors...

Agree, I don't want those options... And a couple others can go... And it's missing stuff I wish it had, like PTV...

I also found the one is Austin is 121 days. But if they're launch editions, maybe that's when they were punched.
