Default Spyder vs 911T

Just saw the new 911T looks really good. Would you sell a 2016 Spyder for that? I know different experience (coupe vs convertible) but am intrigued by the new model

are you good with turbo lag?
how important is sound to you?

your answers to those questions will make the choice obvious

Don't buy the 911 by selling the Spyder first. Get both and sell the one you like least. You likely won't have much depreciation from here if your Spyder is the 981. Maybe not in the 987 either.

911 four cylinders
not roadster
expensive if optioned well
less horsepower
much less exotic
less rare

I built one on the Porsche site and spent a lot of play money making it like I would order.

Pretty disappointing IMHO. Not much sets this apart from a regular 992.

It would have been nice to have some retro color choices, perhaps some different styling accents (pepita seats would have been awesome!)

If they went with a simpler, normally aspirated machine, even a 2.7 liter would have been fine with me...

But those days are gone forever. For $100k you can buy a mighty nice air cooled example of the real deal.

It’s a step in the right direction and certainly Porsche is seeing the demand for a driver focused road car but I don’t think it goes far enough. They should offer LWB’s as a low price option, they should have included sport suspension instead of PASM and LSD should have also been standard.

I am curious if they will offer a similarly optioned Boxster/Cayman although I guess the Spyder/GT4 fit into that description. It would be very interesting if they reduced the sound deadending in the new Spyder and made a bigger effort to reduce the weight. That could be a game changer!

I’m exactly at this decision point. New Boxster Spyder or 911T. I really like the top down experience in the Boxster but the spec of the 911T appeals to me. I do miss the feel of the 911.

The 911T is sort of like the 987.2 Boxster Spyder which has things you could not order on the Boxster S - LSD, LWB seats, and lighter weight(although you added back the weight with A/C and radio.) And like the Spyder, I think the 911T will be greater than the sum of its parts. But who knows until someone drives it.

Personally, I wouldn't two different cars very hard to compare. This is the same scenario I have now with my RS, and Spyder very different. The Spyder will do much better long term vs the 911T if you care. The Spyder is low volume, and would be the car to hold on too. By the way the 991T has no lag ......very fast if that's what you want. Good luck ..

I don’t get it. Per Jalopnik, the 911T saves a mere 10 pounds over the base Carrera. And you don’t get a radio, and it costs more.

Who are they targeting with this?

I'm with you M2, when I referenced the T in my other comment I was thinking back to my brother's 1973 which I would love to have back.

The 911 isn't a sports car.

A Sports car is a two-seater, two-door automobile designed for spirited performance and nimble handling.

LOL

I don’t get it... the Carrera T is everything you state.

*dons flame suit* I actually like the 911 T. If I was looking at a 911 I would start there tbh. Racing yellow, with a manual and black/yellow sport tex interior. Could be happy in that for some time.

However - I would not trade a Spyder for it.

At the end of the day a 911 and a spyder are totally different cars with totally different driving dynamics...if you really want a 911 then of course make the trade.

I’m not going to lie... the Carrera T interested me. Maybe because it very similar formula to the 987.2 Spyder that was once bashed at launch like we are witnessing now. I remember all the hate bouncing around.

What I Like:
-Shorter Gear Ratio Manual Transmission
-Short Shifter w/ red emboss
-Rear Differential Lock
-Sport Chrono Package w/o the wart
-Optional Rear Axle Steering
-Lightweight Rear Glass
-Reduced Sound Deadening
-Optional Full Bucket Seats (not available in any other car except GT’s and Spyders)
-Alcantara Wheel and Shifter
-Rear Seat Delete (Only available in GT’s)
-Agate/Platinum Accent Color
-Optional Interior Package with contrast stitching and Belts
-Standard Sports Exhaust with Black Tips
-No Cost PCM
-Optional PCCBs
-Flat 6 engine

What I don’t like:
-Hp is exact as Base Carrera, the 987.2 Spyder was based on the “S” model with a slight bump
-Turbo vs. NA
-Limited Paint choices... would have loved Chalk
-No PTS - yet?
-Not distinct enough exterior design? That was the huge perk of the 987.2 Spyder, I love the manual roof concept.
-Side Stripes are meh... not horrible, but not great.

At the end of the day I will more than likely pass.
The 981 Spyder is too special and I know I would regret it big!
I’m going to hold out for the 982 Spyder... That will exceed the Carrera T in performance as well as driver connection being a open top.

Curious how Porsche will position the 982 Spyder.... first was about lightweight driver connection, second was about performance, sound and driver connection. Would be nice if the third was all the above!

I would imagine:
-lighter glass
-no sound deadening
-lighter wheels
-shorter gear ratio
-NA Flat 6 close to 400hp
-revised suspension?
-base price increase $7000-10,0000 (over the 981 82k price)

No, not even close.

However, if it came with a proper 6 speed manual, rather than that wacky 7, I'd at least consider it as an add to the garage. I'd have to go back and test drive the base car again to see if I could live with that motor, but the rest of the car would be desirable to me. But the 7 speed kills it for me.
