Default AutoQuest Motorsport - It's Done! The 981 Shorter Final Drive Ratio

One of the most common complaints about the GT4 has been the long gearing. This is especially prevalent on the track where it takes a good bit of time to rev through the powercurve, and you’d be hard pressed to find a track anywhere in the world where you’d ever use 6th gear. The factory final drive ratio has a top speed equivalent of 201mph, which sacrifices the intensity of the acceleration curve and leaves us with a GT4 that is not nearly as quick or responsive as it could be on track and not as exciting as we’d like on the street.

We have spent over 18 months researching and developing a new crown ring and pinion to shorten the final drive ratio. Our new ratio is 19% shorter, reducing the final drive from 3.89 to 4.62. Our new shorter final drive ratio is now perfectly suited for track use, and much more exciting for street driving. It is much more responsive, feeling similar to having an additional 50hp at your disposal.

Replacing and setting up a crown ring and pinion correctly can be a challenging task and requires specialized experience. To maintain our 12 month product warranty, we have made arrangements with one of the leading Porsche Transmission Specialists in the US, BMC & G in Ohio, to perform the installation and assist in the shipping of your transmission.

This is very interesting. Do you have any European representation?

This is EXACTLY what the GT4/Spyder needs. Not 4.0.

I missed this post earlier. Agree, this is just what we need! John, as 'baege' asked, what are the warranty implications? Would love to hear some feedback from drivers after they had a chance to put this through paces. It would be great to confirm the gear speeds from street driving. Depending on the impact on the warranty, I will definitely be interested. Will also need to check with the dealer if they would install this.

Hey why not both?

We can't say yay or nay in regards to any warranty implications, it is simply out of our control and too subjective from dealer to dealer.

Well, we had some very Porsche-experienced individuals drive one of ours at Sebring the other weekend..."Best Porsche I've Ever Driven" was a common topic of conversation. Feel free to give me a call at 484 883 6197 we can chat a little more about that.

For your reference, we don't typically recommend having dealers performing the actual ring and pinion swap. Setting up a ring and pinion properly is a very specialized job that requires a great deal of experience. As these modern transmissions aren't deemed "serviceable" at dealerships, you'd be hard pressed to find a dealership that has a technician with experience in this particular job. That being said, they certainly have the expertise to pull your transmission out, send it out to a Porsche Transmission Specialist, then reinstall it for you. We highly recommend having Brian at BMC&G in Ohio performing the R&P swap. He is one of the best and most experienced P-Car transmission specialists out there, and who we trust fully to do all of our transmission work.

Breaking open the gearbox kills the warranty on it. At least one person with a 3rd gear failure had warranty denied because he put an lsd in it. For a ring and pinion the whole box is disassembled and rebuilt. No dealer would warranty that. Buy a second gearbox for this mod if warranty concerns you at all.

How much is this with a new gear box that a normal shop can simply install once shipped? Also, do you have someone who can do this job in CA?

I should know better! Yeah, I need to think long and hard about this! But, damn, those gear ratios are so compelling! I would be maxing out the revs in bottom three gears all day long!! I live for the red zone!! Porsche, if you are reading: Please wake up and do the right thing! Give us an option of ultra low gearing! We will worship you!!

Well they listened on the 997.2 GT3RS, but not so sure they'll be so generous on our beloved Boxster/Cayman platform. Can't have them accelerating near the 911's haha. You're a true petrolhead Henry, I wish you were here in Florida with us!

John,

I am also interested in buying a new tranny with this mod done and then shipped to Canada. Let me know how we can do this.

There are 5 different 981 transmissions and we'll need to know which part number to look up, I'll shoot you over a PM so I can get your VIN and chat a little further. How's the weather up there? Getting a little chilly I'd imagine.
