I'll reserve judgement until I see the actual final product. The only way I would show any interest is if:
1. It's lightweight (<3000 Lbs)
2. Decent horsepower
3. Manual Transmission
4. Good final design
5. Driver connection with car
Everything I have seen and heard about new BMW's except the M2 is that they are soulless and vanilla.
Regardless no BMW will make me want to part ways with my Spyder.

Three Wheelin'
Spyder competitor? Hardly, me thinks! Though it is too soon to voice an opinion, judging by past and present offerings from BMW, I would seriously doubt it will be up to snuff to challenge Spyder, of any vintage. At the basic level, it needs to offer the following:
- NA power plant
- MT
- Manual top
- Handling dynamics
It seems it will offer NA six and MT. Manual top? Forget about it! That's not how BMW drivers roll!! Handling? We will know. Many would cross-shop if looking for a 982 Boxster. We have seen this movie before in it's previous incarnations!

IF it's a drivers car - we will see (doubt it)

Hideous. Another clown car from BMW.

Drifting
For now, all we have are the beautiful pictures and stunning lines of the Concept Z4 and van Hooydonk adding, "Stripping the car back to the bare essentials allows the driver to experience all the ingredients of motoring pleasure with supreme directness. This is total freedom on four wheels." If that's the plan for the production car, we can't wait to get behind the wheel.
wtf
BMW is becoming the German Toyota.

The BMW 6 speed MT is one of the best in the business. IF they make it an option, then that will be a plus. I would be very surprised if the final version looks anything like this car but we'll see. Overall, BMW's have a weight problem. I can't imagine this car will get under 3000 pounds. The bigger issue is steering feel/ chasis. That's what they will need to perfect to compete with a base 718, let alone a Spyder. Horsepower is not the issue. Given BMW's recent history I'm frankly not optimistic. But I sure hope I"m wrong.
