968 Exhaust Gasket Removal???
I had to pull my exhaust headers to repair a leak. I can't figure out how to get the 4 "O" shaped metal exhaust gaskets out of the head. They get crushed into place when the headers are torqued on, and there is not much access. If anyone can pass on a trick or technique to pop these out, I would be very appreciative.

I do not see how I have the room between the downward sloping exhaust ports and the inside of the fender to be able to tap or pry with any tool. I have dental picks and have already broken a couple of them trying to pry one out. I've gotten these things out numerous times with the head off. No big deal. But I am stymied as to how to get at these with the head on the engine and the engine in the car. There's just no room for any kind of tool I can think of.

Thanks. That was a good idea, and I just tried it. Unfortunately that doesn't change the distance from the inner fender wall and doesn't change the angle of the exhaust ports to make enough difference. I'll be ticked if I have to take the head off to get these exhaust gaskets out.

Any idea what the exhaust gaskets are made of? Are they magnetic by chance? If so, I wonder if a very strong magnet would work. I have a magnetic drain plug somewhere which could lift a 45 lb barbell weight.

The trick is to install them with the lip outward, so you can slip a razor blade or something under that lip to lift them out.
If the smooth side is facing out, you just have to try different things. Take two small, sharp screwdrivers or picks and try to dig them into opposite sides of the face, and try to turn the ring so it breaks free, and hopefully falls out. Or try a torch then compressed air to shock it. Maybe just compressed air will blow them out.
