I finally got the head off today. Do the cam followers need to be retained in their specific bores? Also, how should they be cared for while the head is out for machining / refreshing work? Should the lifters be in a bucket of oil?

Thanks

Yes, they line bored so they must go back the exact same way. If you look closely, each can follower is stamped with a number. Just keep them away from dust. Always good to leave lifters submerged in engine oil.

Do the stamped numbers indicate the bore they came out of?

No, small caps start with one on the front left, facing the engine. There are also numbers stamped on the head close to the cap on the cover gasket surface. Make sure you get them all facing the right way - stamped side out on each side.

the lifters/cam followers do NOT need to stay in their original bores, machining-wise, but they should remain where they were to match up with a "mated wear surface" on the camshafts.
