Default After Market MAF Experiences?

Has anyone tried one of these? Much cheaper than the 900 dollar bosch part.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mass-Air-Flo...VWxFK4&vxp=mtr

The mesh is different, I can't see the sensor. I suppose one could use their old housing, and I doubt there is anything magical about the bosch part for porsche. This has no labels, so I assume it is a midnight run of an authorized production in china.

I am kinda answering my own questions, so far research indicates the part is actually a copy of a standard audi part by bosch, and tuners use OUR part for increased performance.

Searching part numbers on the MAF has lead me to this:

http://12v.org/urs/engine_map/20442.phtml

I guess the flat grill with large openings is to help with air turbulence.

Audi part on left, Porsche special deal on right:

Now this chart shows some measurements from the devices, the OEM in this case means the audi part on the left.

I guess dirty pins and bent plug receptacle are common on these too.

Going to co clean my MAF connector now....

I bought one of these. My car was running lean. Put this in and it ran richer. Is that because my original MAF is old and reading low? Or is this close but not quite identical in terms of reading/output? Wish i had a known well working stock one to compare as well. That would answer a lot of questions.

Did you swap the guts? I was going to disassemble mine, and use it to insert in the proper tube. I assume if the wire is dirty, it can not cool down as well, even with more airflow, and the engine will assume you are not moving as much air.

Rich at idle and lean on throttle I think are signs of a bad MAF. I feel a loss of power on mine right now.

The chart I posted above is supposed to be the output readings from both of the sensors. Very close in readings.

I cleaned the pins on mine, and some of the hesitation has gone, but still there.

Did not swap the guts, just swapped the whole thing out.

Cheap MAF is a recipe for eventual disaster.
I had my Subaru flat-bedded home 4 times in December due to a dying "Autozone" MAF that the PO had installed.

The housing is the easy part to make or re-use. The rebuilders or cheap aftermarket new use a very basic (crude) electronics package that can and will fail at the worst moment, like driving down the highway in pouring rain in the rural/mountainous part of northern San Diego county.

Believe user thomasmryan found that a VOLVO 960 Maf might be a suitable replacement.

Any one have recommendations for a rebuilder?

Paying over 900 for a "new" which I assume is rebuilt seems a little nuts.

Possible rebuild link but across the pond.

Thank you.

The symptoms they list sound like my car.

the jds sharktuner videos go into a little depth of the combination of temperature and flow as the output signal.

I have been chasing intermittent stumbling, hesitation, stalling and starting problems on my 968 E class PCA race car for the past year. Talked to many people, replaced my plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, crankshaft and cam sensors, DME temp sensor, installed a new kill switch and cleaned up add-on wiring for my transponder and other accessories. Still was having problems.
At the last Road Atlanta PCA club race, I was still having problems, so I replaced my ECU with a used one I bought from a fellow 968 forum member. Still having problems. I had previously bought the eBay MAF before the race since I was planning on replacing the ECU and or MAF to continue to track down my problems. So I replaced my MAF with the eBay one.
And to my surprise for the 1st time over 1 year all my problems resolved and my car ran without any problems for the 2 sprint races.
When I bough the eBay MAF, I asked the seller ogin.inc about the MAF because I was concerned about it. He said it was a Chinese copy, was also concerned about the tighter mesh screen, had the manufacturer run tests that showed close results to the Bosch MAF within 3% allowed difference. He also said he has not had problems reported to him in the 1 year he has sold this MAF.
I also looked for a source to get my MAF rebuilt. JDS responded to me they don't repair 968 MAFs.
I found Injection Labs in Colorado, www.injectionlabs.com. Also had some good reviews online.
I sent my stock and the eBay MAFs to them. They repaired my stock MAF, was ~50% out of calibration. And they tested the eBay MAF, said it was in calibration for a 968 MAF, but they thought it would be slower to respond than a stick MAF because of the way it was built.
Cost for repair and return shipping of my stock MAF was $279.99. Very pleased with their service.

Dave

Just got it today, if anyone is interested in better pics, I will post pics here.

Will also install this weekend if I get a chance and see if it cures my problem, if it does, I will send my original off to get rebuilt (new platinum wire I assume.)

Seems they jacked the price too, I got mine for about $70...
