968 Sunroof doesn't operate w/key in position 1

Changed both sunroof gears on Saturday, both were stripped. Managed to get them timed to each other correctly.

The weird thing is that with the key in what I think is Position 1 (the first point when rotating where the dash lights come on) the arms won't move in either direction. In Position 2 (just before engine crank position) the sunroof switch can move the arms all the way in and out, including back to the release position. In no case do they automatically stop anywhere, in example in the locked/closed position.

Have read through everything on Clarks Garage including their troubleshooting table for the sunroof, this problem is not mentioned. Also searched this forum.

Is this symptomatic of one or both limit switches being bad?

A limit switches could be bad, but most likely it is a timing issue.

You can have the gears timed to each other so that the sun roof lifts up and down , but the limit switches in the side compartment where the motor is may not be timed to the sun roof or lifting gear position.

Timing problem is in the clue is that the arms move all the way back to the release position.
