Default Cracked Windshield

Drove on the I-495 from Long Island to NYC when a large stone or something hit my windshield and left a pretty large round crack. My insurance (Geico) will cover for an aftermarket windshield and I was just wondering if these even exists? To be clear I do want the OEM version, but I may have to pay the difference if there is indeed an aftermarket windshield out there.

I learned a long time ago that GEICO is super cheap when it comes to any repair. Read your policy to make sure they are not trying to pull a fast one on you. Go OEM for a quality replacement. SAFELITE is the best company to get a replacement windshield. The cheap ones are made in China and most have a distortion where they curve and do not fit correctly. Do not let them put in an early 944 83 -85 or 924 windshield as the length is short.

Cheers,
Larry

These windshields are not easy to find, you need a later model 944 windshield. Look up the part number in pet. Safelite could not get one for me unless they ordered it from Germany at $1200. I found one through eBay and had a local guy install it. I can get a second windshield new, but it will probably be around $600 and you would need an installer. Pm me if interested...I'm In central NJ.

I was lucky enough to cut one out with 928/Lotus owner "Esprit," who lives a couple of towns over.

we went very slowly as not to crack it.

that lovely piece of crystal is now sitting in my barn.

i was also lucky enough to find new oem glass for 380 dollars 2 years ago (from a shop in Philly that was unloading it).

put that one on the car.

gonna stop in at DC Auto and cut out another sometime.

cuz these things command $1,000 ++.

Bear in mind the coupe and cab have different windshields, the cab one is shorter IIRC.

Isn't the 85.5 and later 944 the same windscreen as the 968? Maybe it won't have the antenna but I think it will fit. 944 windscreens should be pretty cheap.

87-2

Cab: 944.541.011.12
Coupe: 944.541.011.14

This might work, you'd have to call to match part number. Not a far drive from westchester.

Safelite will sell you their house brand (SGC) which is only marginally worse than their Chinese brand (XYG). Stay way from their junk glass a d make sure the installer they send has more than three weeks' worth of experience.

Check with your local high end body shop and ask who they use.

Stick with the major brands like Sigla, Sekurit, PPG, LOF, etc. Safelite's in-house brand is absolute junk. If it doesn't stress crack the first day, it will on the second, and the mirror bracket will fall off overnight.

If it's dimensionally the same as a late 944, why not just have Safelite install the antenna version? you don't have to hook up the antenna and you could easily cut off the antenna pigtail. They have them in the system and it's the correct Sekurit. Last one I had installed was <$400 in my area.

There is no aftermarket 968 windshield. If you have a coupe, the part number is 944-541-011-14. Your best price will be from Sunset Imports 800-346-0182. There are plenty of them available in the US. It has green tint on the top and has the antenna in it. Just cut off the lead.
BTW you'll also need the heavy rubber seal that goes around the windshield. It's pn 993-541-925-00.

Sunset is expensive, particularly with shipping across the country, prob close to $800 plus install. Dcauto has them, $690 shipped. Best bet is ebay with pick up to inspect.

yeah,

that's new verses old. glass gets brittle with age.

love DC Auto, but, the new one is the better price because it should theoretically last longer.

also, it's likely that they were made recently, since the dealers were temporarily out of stock a couple of years ago.

Yes, thanks, these are the correct part numbers for the 968 and I already have a quote from Sunset for $562 plus shipping. Waiting for Safelite to do their research and tracking down the part, I made it clear that I only accept OEM. Wouldn't be surprised if I had to order myself, but we'll see.

That's what I have currently installed, I guess that it was replaced at some point before. I just don't like the antenna in the middle of the glass, just my personal preference.
