I disagree about the power and found way too much grit downstream of the K&N pod filters on my motorcycles that had them to use them in an engine I cared about. It might not matter, the grit might be too small to cause much wear but IMO they do not add power so there is little point.

Thanks for the feedback everyone...I'm trying to figure out what do to for performance upgrades...I have been reading the posts, and a lot of ppl recommend a k&n air filter then possibly a chip upgrade (RS Barn or Promax)....or to go for the supercharger.... I don't want to do anything that is going to hurt the engine...

If you want a little performance bump, do the airbox mod. It will retain the stock filter but maximize airflow. If you really want performance, install a supercharger and K&N and get the sock for the K&N to try to minimize downstream grit.

Yes I agree - I think to spend 5g's on a supercharger might be worth it to upgrade to a 911 C2 or C4...I'm not sure I am ready for that leap yet...I want to make sure I learn how to drive properly with my 968 and learn about maintenance etc...plus the 968 is quite unique - nothing against the 911's, but I see a lot more of them around now...

Heh, the airbox mod IMO draws hot backwash from the radiator and engine compartment rather than cool air from the high pressure zone near the front license plate. But it makes a sucking sound that gets people excited.

Every part and many acc can be ordered from Roger at 928sRUS. Don't let the name fool you, he carries and sells a lot of parts for 968, 944, and of course 928s as well. He specializes in international shipping and can have things to you very quickly.

I would like to point out I have not tested the airbox mod or the K&N, but I have run K&N filters on bikes and was dismayed by how much grit I found downstream of them. I also do not like cleaning and oiling them and prefer to just throw out a dirty air filter and swap in a clean one every few years.
I do not feel that these mods can be tested on a dyno as there is no dyno room fan that can replicate the effect of air moving over the car. Datalogging at speed would be the way to do it. If indeed you can gain HP you would need to have MAF and injector duty to support it. If I find a properly modified 968 airbox I'd be inclined to try this. I'm not inclined to mod one of mine. I have a 968 K&N filter or two on the shelf.
This is pretty interesting regarding the NA airbox and K&N, it'd be fun to run the same tests on a 968:

It's sorta possible that we might get some gains by un-doing something the factory did to reduce intake noise however I feel if there was real power there the factory could have mitigated noise another way, common on other cars of the era, and then hit their HP target more easily and cheaply while realizing more MPG for free as well.
In the end it's your car, your money, do whatcha wanna.
