Default 968 turbo

Hi all,

This is my first post on rennlist and I would like to ask some questions about custom built 3.0L 16V turbo engines. To get your attention I'll first introduce my 968 with 3L turbo engine :

Spec:
3.0L 16v w/o Variocam
9,5:1 CR
PO H-profile forged rods
Oil pan baffel
Crank scraper
Cometic .060" 5 layer headgasket
Raceware headstuds
Holset HX40 super
3,5" downpipe, 3" exhaust
Tial 38mm wastegate
SnowPerformance water-methanol injection
3" aluminium intake piping
1400cc injectors
Mallory fuel pressure regulator
034 Motorsport ignition coils
VEMS V3.6
KEP stage 2 clutch and 4-pad disk

Engine produces 548bhp/695nm @ 1,2bar , pump gas (car is in everyday use)

This engine has proven its reliability for now but here comes my question, how far has anyone pushed 3L 16v engines? It would be nice if someone share their experiences, knowhow and problems (bottlenecks) for reliable use.

Thanks

You may have better luck in the 944 turbo forum. You should check out the 3L registry thread that's stickied over there and get your car on the list. Corleone's 3L is about the most extreme that comes to mind right now and George D's car has undergone a ton of development since his 3L build, but that's 8V. I know Chris White and IMA, among others have produced very nice 3L builds, but sharing the info about those builds is at the discretion of the customer. Here's the most recent thread I've seen about a 16V 3L turbo:

Nice power you have there. Most of the 3 litre turbo's that I have heard of are not using the 16 valve head. My car has the 16 valve head but I can't comment on the bottlenecks as I didn't build the engine. My car dyno'd 418 rwhp (approx 480 hp using the 1.15 correction factor) at 1 bar of boost on pump gas - no water/meth. This is the mid boost setting. I have not tried the high boost setting yet and according the Kelly Moss that is where all the tuning was done. I think we have all heard of the 1000 hp DOOM engines that were built by Norwood that eventually were stolen. Like anything else, if you have cubic dollars I am sure you can get whatever you want out of one.

PS: Heritage Motors sounds like a great shop and a Rennlister has a nice 968 turbo built by them. It was also in a magazine. Maybe he can chime in?

nice!! If you can get the varocam working, you'll hold torque longer at higher rpm!!

Good looking stuff! I saw the video about your car out on Youtube, but my Estonian(?) isn't good enough to understand, well, anything!

Does your car see any track time, or is it pretty much only street driven?

You can check out an older post of mine for some 16v info.

Your project looks nice, lots of attention to detail. The only thing that popped into mind looking at it adn the videos is you may need more oil coolng if you want to run it on a road course. The can never be too much oil cooling!

BTW - I have a 16v 3.0 turbo in my 968 cab that is the same color as yours!

i can't tell the difference with the heads by looking. but it's a 968 car and says w/o (with out) varocam so i assume it has been disabled.

Default Head Type

It's an early S2 head. Midway through the S2 production run the head casting was changed due to a strength problem. The later S2 heads and the 968 heads have a cross hatched ribbing on the outside of the head casting. You can tell a 968 casting from a late S2 by the threaded port in the oil passage. It's where the sensor is that let's the DME know that there is sufficient oil pressure to make the Vario cam function.
BTW - I have cracked an early S2 head on the Dyno before -I don't use them for high power 16 v set ups anymore!
