Default Race car registration?

There are some really neat 968s that vanished when they arrived in North America including 2 speed yellow 1993 M030 coupes. I suspect they became race cars. When you have a race car do you have to "register" it somewhere? I know that someone maintains the race history in a log book that years later, can make a car more valuable. How does it work for race cars?
Just curious.
Thanks

If you turn a car into a race car pretty much all the different organizations, PCA, SCCA, NASA, require or issue you a logbook for the car. The logbook goes with the car. Example I bought an already prepared race car that already had a PCA logbook. But there isn't a registry that I'm aware of, but only started racing this year.

Typically you can't register a racecar because it's no longer street legal....

No registration, no title for most race cars. Just a bill of sale, with Vin.
