Merits of 968 discussion
Hi: I'm a 996 owner and am looking for a late model 968 to Keep in FL (I'm in MA) and drive for the winter months down there. (Can't afford to ship or drive the 996 back and forth.)
So my question is for the 968 folks, can you give me a quick briefing on pros and cons. I guess you always buy the last year of a model and I guess that would be 94??
I can get pricing from Bruce Anderson and ads...I just want the pros and cons!
TIA,

Don, the last yr was 1995. I would get a 94 or a 95. They are essentially identical cars. You might want 17 inch wheels.
Pros: Very reliable, decent torque around town, 6 speed. Very well balanced, if you get M030 then a great handler with excellent brakes. Rare, I mean rare, you will go through mon ths before you see another one.
Cons: Dreaded timing belt has to be changed every 45k or catastrophic damage to valves. Besides that I annot think of any other cons. Most people will not know what you are driving and might consider it a current production model.
Also, it will not have the top end of your 996.
Regards

Don, I got a '94 almost 3 yrs. ago. I bought it after 6 years with an '88 944 na. Had 55K miles on it, now up to almost 75K. It was my daily driver for over two years (recently bought a '99 Forester S for a beater / daily driver).
No negative comments. One additional con is the inter-cam chain & Variocam tensioner; they need to be inspected or replaced about every 75-100K miles. Failure is as catastrophic as the timing belt. Another con, rear seat, like all 924 series cars, is basically useless for adults or even large kids.
Great torque, very flexible around town. It doesn't need a lot of gear changing in traffic. Good visibility for lane changing & parking. Hatchback is practical & useful. Reliable. Fun. Scarce.
Jim, happy owner...

If you are looking for a daily driver that you want to keep fairly stock, its a great car. It drives very easy.
If you plan to autox the car, you won't like the 1st/rev gear position. The e-brake handle doesn't fold down when the brake is engauged which is annoying.
If the car has been well maintained, and has records, you will be happy with it.
It costs $$$ to get more horsepower out of it, so make sure you are happy with the 240bhp.
I agree with the 17" wheels and if you can find it M030 suspension. The car will out corner many many other types of vehicles.
Good luck in your hunt, and good choice of car.

Thanks all for the input. Car will be driven casually and Damien, your car sounds like a dream car, but I have to get a Tip because of the wife <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

Don, make sure you drive a tip and a six speed to feel the difference in speed delivery. There is a significant difference in acceleration, especially in the cabs. IRRC, tip cabs take over 8 seconds to go 0-60.

Dan, hey how are you? I was always looking forward to meeting you. Its a great car you got there. How do you like. A lot of my parts were sourced from powerhaus as well.
Hope to see you at Hershey, should be fun with your car and alberto's 3.4 liter turbo as well.
