very usefull.

Not bad, I checked a couple 968 VINs and it was mostly correct. Unfortuneatly it doesn't tell you exterior or interior or the X code options. I have those so I'm not out of business yet!

Why?

Let me try (assuming North Amercian 968). Year, coupe/cab, last 3 # of VIN.
Jeff

1994, coupe, 076.
You only needed those number?

That's all I need. So, let's see what we have here:

You car is:
#1,273 of 2,234 NA 968 coupes
#16 of the 718 1994 NA 968 coupes
1 of 595 Black NA 968 coupes (most common color on 968 coupe)
1 of 317 Black/Black 968 coupes (most common combo on 968 coupe)

Factory options include:
LT - partial leather interior in black
XD4 - painted crest center caps
437 - full 8 way power driver's seat
490 - hi-fi sound speakers w/Amp
691 - AM/FM single CD player in dash

Your car is also a 718/Model year reVIN 968. It was originally born as a 1993 and then reVINed to a 1994 by Porsche so you have the 944 style seats and the engine bay trim pieces. What is your vehicle production date? March or April 1993?

I don't list the standard feature option codes and I don't have the exclusive interior options (like seat piping or deviated carpet).

How'd I do?

Jeff

JonT 01-10-2011 02:23 PM

Me me me, can I play? 94 USA coupe, 0646.
thanks
Jon

I don't think your things working!
Navy blue exterior color

As for the rest I'm not sure, because; no original wheels came with it, radio has been changed!

So not sure...

Hmm,

Your full VIN is WP0AA2963RS820076???

I'll have to check my files when I get home tonight.

Watch for another post. My data is based on these vehicle information stickers which you can find on page one of your maintenace manual or stuck to the rear hatch floor or taillight panel on the left.

Okay Jon,
Let's see if I do better for you:

You car is:
#1,843 of 2,234 NA 968 coupes
#586 of the 718 1994 NA 968 coupes
1 of 29 D3 Iris Blue NA 968 coupes
1 of 11 D3 Iris Blue 968 coupes paired with midnight blue/marble gray interior

Factory options include:
WQ - partial leather interior in midnight blue/marble gray
XD4 - painted crest center caps
220 - Limited slip differential
437 - full 8 way power driver's seat
490 - hi-fi sound speakers w/Amp
595 - CD changer

Your car is NOT a 718/Model year reVIN 968 so it is a true 1994. You have the 993 style seats and no engine bay trim pieces. What is your vehicle production date? Dec 93? Jan 94?

Jeff

Ha!!! yeah, those digits do make a difference. Looks much better now:

Your car is:
#1,544 of 2,234 NA 968 coupes
#287 of the 718 1994 NA 968 coupes
1 of 220 F8 Midnight Blue NA 968 coupes
1 of 89 F8 MidnightBlue 968 coupes paired with classic gray interior

Factory options include:
TT - partial leather interior in classic gray
XD4 - painted crest center caps
398 - 17" 993 style Cup 2 wheels
437 - full 8 way power driver's seat

Your car is NOT a 718/Model year reVIN 968 so it is a true 1994. You have the 993 style seats and no engine bay trim pieces. I could use your production date (found on the driver's door VIN sticker)

Is that better?
Jeff

First link uses same factory source as PET 7 to get model and option data. It just tries to explain codes but isn't any better than PET. Both are simply pragrammed wrong and would return much more explanations if code would change leading letter I to M.

490 - hi-fi sound speakers w/Amp
595 - Rear spoiler painted body color

Other options on my sticker:
331 -- AM/FM Cassette with 2 door speakers (note though option M490 has the 10 speaker option)
423 -- Cassette container and coin box. Car did not have this when I got it, just an empty bin with lid.
425 -- Read window wiper
454 -- Automatic speed control
650 -- Electric sunroof
09991 - Have seen lots of discussions about this and whether or not all USA cars have this. Exclusive program I believe.

It is a true 1994 with all the updates, build date Nov 1993. I have a pretty rare piece of documentation called the 1994 MY supplement that lists all the updates from 1993; it's pretty cool.

--UPDATE HERE-- this document is WKD 498 821, which a quick google shows as available at sunset for ten bucks.

http://www.sunsetimports.com/resource/wkd-498-821/

Someone jump on that, I though this was long out of print.
My scanner at home is on the fritz or I'd show you a sample.

By the way, the Iris Blue over midnight blue+marble gray is really stunning, but I'm kinda biased there :D

I have two round electric switches on the side of the driver's seat, fore/aft and up/down. Not sure what makes an 8-way seat. I did not have a CD changer when I got the car but the Autoatlanta decoder link above lists M595 as rear spoiler painted body color, which I DO have.
I'll dig up the option sticker when I get home and update this.

Opps, my fault for cutting and pasting. 595 is indeed body colored rear spoiler. 692 is CD changer. As for the power seat it is easy enough to check. Compare your two seat switchess. The driver's should have slightly different controls then the passenger (although both have two switches). A standard 4 way seat has a bar in the front to move the seat forward and backward. To do that with the eight way seat you use the switch. I would love a scan of that document.
Thanks

These are all standard, no extra cost features on the NA 968. I only listed the options. 09991 is there because your car has the Xd4 painted center caps option. XD4 is part of the exclusive program.

Thanks for the document image!

Made between 03/94 - 08/94. I believe in 968 cases both '94 and '95 M718 early model year production started at March. From legal point of view anything after January 1st was ok to be called next MY car. In any case door sticker in early M718 VIN cars will tell when first of them were made. 0061 was first and 0108 is not too far from it that both couldn't have been made in same month.

Normal '95 MY were done in usual August change point meaning 08/94 - 08/95.

Actually February 1994. There were true "R" 1994 non-718 cars produced in Febraury and then Porsche started with the "S" 1995 718 cars produced in the same month.

Does your data source have actual build dates or is info based on individual known car door stickers? Not saying you are wrong. Its just interesting to know if there is system where such data could be checked besided fully closed to outsiders Porsche internal databases.

When it comes to production dates, I get the information from the door jam stickers. Example, I assume that if the prod date from the VIN sticker from 968 w VIN 300 is March and 968 w VIN 400 is March then all the cars in between them are also March so I haven't seen them all.

Here you go Scott:

Your car is:
#344 of 2,008 NA 968 cabs
#344 of the 667 1992 NA 968 cabs
1 of 34 F4 Horizon Blue cabs
1 of 16 F4 Horizon Blue tiptronic cabs
1 of 5 F4 Horizon Blue cabs paired with classic gray/light gray interior and a V8 dark blue top

Factory options include:
249 - Tiptronic
F4 - Horizon Blue metallic paint
TU - partial leather interior in classic gray/light gray
XD4 - painted crest center caps
490/494 - hi-fi sound with Amps

Your car has a November 1991 build and has the recessed hood badge. Do you have the edged rear emblems as well? I'm not listing standard equipment like the 331 cassette player/454 cruise, ect.

Jeff

TonD 06-09-2011 01:19 PM

Jeff, if I understand it correctly, you only can work this magic for NA cars...correct? If so, do you know of anyone (apart from Porsche of course) that might have similar data about non-NA cars? I can't seem to find my option sticker anywhere and I'm dying to know what options it originally came with, what is the exact code of my interior color (I never can figure out / remember is it marine blue, navy blue, maritime blue? some kinda blue that's for sure! :D)...

Edit: aahhh, I really should update my avatar, been driving a midnight blue '93 968 for almost a year now :)

jeff968 06-09-2011 06:18 PM

TonD, that's right, my database is of the North American cars but many of the codes are the same. Since you have a 93 your interior is most likely Marine Blue in color with partial leather, code SW. You can visit your local Porsche dealer and have them pull a profile on your car but keep in mind, even Porsche's own computers puts out incorrect data. Certain codes have been reused since the 968 days so you'll see a GT package listed on the profile but there is no such thing for a 968. That code was used for the am/fm cassette player. Let me know if you need any help with the codes.
Jeff

TonD 06-09-2011 06:36 PM

Thanks! My local OPC is not really cool with anything pre 997 / 987 / Cayenne / Panamera :( But I guess I can make a request at Pon Porsche, the Dutch sole importer.

Sam Minnitti 07-24-2012 11:50 PM

ok, no problem, thanks for the quick reply.

Damian in NJ 07-25-2012 11:38 AM

Jeff's head would explode if he tried to start in with the 944 variants; US 944 models outsold US 968 cars by almost 10-1. Besides, 968's were available with the Exclusiv option program, while 944 models weren't open to much customization as far as options.

I have some good news for you. Your cab is a "1 of 1" in that exterior/top/interior combo.

1 of 31 Z8 black metallic cabs
1 of 1 Z8 black metallic cabs with a V1 classic grey top and a TU light grey/classic grey interior (there were 2 black metallic cabs with a V9 black top and the same TU interior)

Options include the paint, partial leather, XD4 paint crest center caps, 490 hi-fi sound, 692 CD changer. Your car is a 718 car which means it was originally born as a 93 and then reVINed by Porsche to be a early 94.

Additional options include XD4 painted crest center caps, 398 17" cup2 wheels, 418 painted body side molding, 490 hi-fi sound, 595 body colored rear spolier. This is a true 94 so it will have the 993 style seats. 1 of 25 in that paint interior combo.

Calguy,
Looks like a black cab with a black top and the black/light grey interior. 1 of 432black cabs, 2nd most popular color, 1 of 14 paired with that interior. The only factory option is the partial leather interior. I've seen the car before. In Sept 03 it was for sale on eBay in Florida with 64K miles.
Jeff

calguy 07-30-2012 01:58 AM

Jeff,

You are da man! You are spot on with the Florida sell, I saw it on the car fax report. It's early years were spent in New York, then later she moved to a warmer climate to Florida. Fate had it for her to move to follow Manifest destiny and moved to Arizona in Tuscon. Then she went to California and has found a new home here in the Bay area with just north of 84K miles. :)

Well, know it's probably 1 of 1 with the interior because I changed the carpet from the light grey (I could not find the same light grey carpet) to black. I still need to take some pics and do a before and after.

Thank you Jeff, my hat goes off to you sir!

Hi would like to know the option list
Thanks
Newbie

Sure thing:

NS840207 - 6spd cab
#147 of 2,008 North American 968 cabs
#147 of 667 1992 NA 968 cabs
1 of 34 F4 Horizon Blue cabs
1 of 21 F4 Horizon Blue cabs with dark blue top and marine blue interior
Factory options include metallic paint, partial leather, headlight washers.

The car is an early 968 built in October 1991 and should have the early car features including the recessed hood badge and larger, edged rear emblem.

If you are a PCA member don't forget to join the PCA 968 register.

Thanks Jeff

If those are the only option on this car and what will be a fair price for a low milles, no complete maintenance record, need belt and water pump as a minimum to bring the maintenance up to date

Thanks

Marc

Remember, those are the options that would be listed on the window sticker and raise the MSRP price. The 968 came with tons of standard equipment. As for value, depending on the condition a nice, low mileage cab can go for anywhere between $10K and $20K. And that car is in a rare and desireable color.

RNS820332 - 6spd coupe
#1,529 of 2,234 North American 968 coupes
#272 of 718 1994 NA 968 coupes
1 of 220 F8 Midnight Blue coupes
1 of 72 F8 Midnight Blue coupes paired with a cashmere/black interior

Factory options include metallic paint, partial leather, XD4 painted crest center caps, 418 body colored side moldings, 595 painted rear spoiler.

The car is a true 94 "non-718" car so it has all the late 94 model year changes like the 993-style seats and the missing engine bay trim pieces.

That is great! Thank you for the information.

I have the original window sticker and was interested to see what options you would come back with were ordered on the car.

Unfortunately, it appears the drivers seat was replaced with a common 4-way seat lacking lumbar support. Though it looks very rare, anyone have an idea where I might find a replacement seat that is correct for the car as ordered? My current seat is in pretty nice shape, but has some age, so the original must have failed some time ago.

The original stereo was also replaced with a Boxster item, though I would suspect this is less of a concern for someone wanting a bone stock original car should I sell it some day (some day many many years from now!).

Nate,
I assume what I listed matched your window sticker? As for your seat, I continue to hear about original selling dealer shenanigans where parts were switched in order to sell a car so maybe the dealer took the seat out and swapped with another car???

Jeff

Jeff,

Yes, your information matched my window sticker. I believe the original owner was very neurotic about the car (even have a plaque for a 1st place in a PCA car show!) so it would surprise me that the seat was not replaced with the original equipment. I also have what appears to be 100% of the records, and I did not see mention of a seat failure. So maybe you are spot on with the dealer switcheroo?

Marc,
I really don't know the differences on the 968s from Japan. Maybe others might. At least the steering wheel is on the correct side :)

My database is only North American 968 coupes and cabs.

Pretty sure that's a German VIN number. I have troubles finding all the option code info.

Sure thing:

SS820258 - 6spd coupe
#2,173 of 2,234 North American 968 coupes
#198 of 259 1995 NA 968 coupes
1 of 64 K6 Aventurine metallic coupes
1 of 33 K6 Aventurine metallic coupes paired with a cashmere and black interior

Factory options include metallic paint, LC partial leather in cashmere, XD4 painted crest center caps, 437 full power drivers seat, XC9 dark rootwood 6spd shift knob (only 37 coupes had this option)

The car is a 718 car which means it was originally born a 1994. This 968 is actually the second to the last 718 car for 1995. After #259 they built 60 more true 95s to finish the run.

Here you go:

RS820186 - 6spd coupe
#1,383 of 2,234 North American 968 coupes
#126 of 718 1994 NA 968 coupes
1 of 595 A1 Black coupes (most popular color on 968 coupe)
1 of 14 A1 Black coupes paired with light grey/black interior

Factory options include TS partial leather in light grey/black, XD4 painted crest center caps, 437 full power drivers seat, 692 CD changer.

The car is a 718 car which means it was originally born a 1993 (I believe a May 1993 build, checlk the door jam VIN sticker for me) and reVINed by Porsche to be a 1994.

Jeff

BTW, *** All I need for a 968 production profile is coupe or cab, year, last 3 of VIN ***

Thanks! Yes 5/93 is correct. The light grey/black interior variations did they also include options for seat color as well as carpet ?

Attached is a photo of the code TS light grey/black. This is what you would get in the standard configuration. Now, deviated carpet (in a different color, most likely black instead of the light grey which is almost white) was an option. You could also change things up and get different materials and piping but I can't see that you would change the seat color. If that is what you are seeing I'll bet the originals were swapped out. That color is almost white so it gets dirty very quickly. Looks awesome when new.

Hey Jeff, hi gang...

Well I'm back in the fold, having picked up my '94 968 cab back in September. Needs a little cosmetic TLC, but mechanically she's in amazing condition.

Some details:
One-owner car - elderly couple, Hilton Head SC retirement community cruiser
Garage kept
Every record, service receipt, book, pamphlet, etc.
90K miles with all services completed, and then some
No mods to radio, body, nothing.
All original body and paint
Original top in mint condition - can't understand how, honestly
Seats need the obligatory reupholstering
And... it has the 220 LSD

Jeff, I'd appreciate anything else you can tell me about WP0CA2967RS840369 - thanks!

The seats are original and trashed. The front carpet has been replaced and is black. I'm trying to decide what to do with the color interior rehab. The door panel carpet and front kick panels were dyed black and were looking terrible with grey patches. I just got finished recoloring them black. The seats are next.....

So, I bought Chris's (sydneyman) '92 968. It was delivered last night and had a sticky lifter. I have since "unstickied" it using the mario and luigi technique. In the event that I was unable to get this head sorted, I bought an 88 951 for a motor swap. It's been a long time goal to have a turbo S replica. Chris's car was a good candidate as it is a black car with the beige two tone interior, nice suspension and he has added lightness. I also didn't want to molest a 1 of 1.

Still, I'd like to know what the database says about this car. Jeff, would you please?

WP0AA2968NS820634

Did a bunch of wrenching on it tonight, sorted a ton of stuff. Then I embarked on the best drive I've had in ages. A bit under two years to be exact since my last p-car. The last 968 was in 2006, and a 951 since then. This car, properly set up, is such a blast.

Many thanks, Jeff!!!

Hi Marc,
Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I've been on vacation in sunny Florida but now I'm back to snowy Connecticut.

That is a very cool car with lots of great options. I have not seen or heard of it before.

It is black metallic, 1 of 31, but it has many great and rare options:
It has full leather seats in cashmere (a $2,500 option and rare)
dual heated seats
17" cup2 wheels
full power driver's seat
hi-fi sound
cd changer

and it has two rare exclusive options:
XC9 - dark rootwood shift knob
X32 - dark rootwood e-brake handle (1 of only 3 of the 4,242 NA 968s to get this option.

If you bring a camera cane you get me a photo of that e-brake handle. Thanks

Good luck
Jeff

PS820063 - 6spd coupe
#652 of 2,234 North American 968 coupes
#3 of 605 1993 NA 968 coupes
1 of 12 F4 Horizon Blue coupes

Factory options (with codes) include:

220 - Limited Slip differential
403 - 17" cup1 wheels (standard with 030)

691 - am/fm single in-dash CD

Comments: Your car is the ONLY North American M030 968 coupe produced in F4 horizon blue

If you could let me know the production date for the car that would be great. You can find it on the driver's door jam VIN sticker. It should read 8/92?

Jeff

Thanks, I hope you like the production data.

Back in the nineties Porsche used a horizon blue coupe for US photos. I often wondered if it was your car. It looks like a close match.

Wow... I guess she is a keeper... Plus she may be a photo model.... Getting sexier all the time. Now I understand some of the m030 benefits.. All of a sudden... The ride is smooth as silk... That is Horizon Blue Metallic silk!
Thanks Jeff

Looking for some help. Just joined the forum today and unfortunately looking to sell my 1992 Guards Red Tiptronic 968. It is my last Porsche that I have and I may be moving internationally. Girlfriend says it has to go. Now I know it is a rare, but how rare so I can determine a fair price for me and the buyer. Here are the particulars. VIN# WP0AA2961NS820247. I know what that means except the 20247 being the serial number with modifications (what modifications)? Next is this designation 944 04 then M4444-42N R4400-. Paint Code is L80K or full Guards Red exterior with LT (leather seat option). I have the following Option Codes: C02, 139, 249, 288, 383, 387, 454, 490, 494, 498, 650 and 891. I know the car was originally shipped to a dealer in Lake Forest, IL and a novelist bought it from Aspen, CO. Afterwards, it was purchased in Beverly Hills, CA and then by another dealer whom I bought it from. I know it being a Coupe, Tiptronic and having Sport Seats make it rare, but I don't know the full details. The vehicle was serviced only at Porsche (by me) and has a total of 37,000 miles. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry, my databases are limited to 1992-1995 North American 968s.

rude944 11-24-2014 10:18 PM

Got one for you, Jeff.

It's an interesting one that I found, close by recently. It's about parted out, but I wondered to the rarity of it. Current owner said it was from Eugene, Oregon. It did over 200k over its lifetime, wound up with some carbon fiber wrap on the hood and a pretty trashed interior and some loud noises in the head.

Vin ends in PS820370

What's the package and history on it?

I hate to see the rare ones go. Here are the details:

PS820370 - 6spd coupe
#959 of 2,234 North American 968 coupes
#310 of 605 1993 NA 968 coupes
1 of 220 F8 Midnight Blue coupes (most popular metallic coupe)
1 of 4 F8 Midnight Blue coupes paired with a light grey/cobalt blue interior

Factory options (with codes) include:
VA - partial leather in light grey/cobalt blue
XD4 - Painted crest center caps
403 - 17" cup1 wheels
490 - hi-fi sound speakers with amps
691 - am/fm single in-dash CD
XC9 - dark rootwood shift knob

That interior is very rare with only 11 coupes produced with it.

Jeff:

All consistent with my car. Recessed hood badge, limited slip, Eight way drivers seat. Everything as you described except OEM radio has been replaced.

Not sure about 10 speakers. I have 3 in each door. Have not pulled panel in rear. I suppose there could be two speakers back there on each side?

Thank you very much for the info. Definitely cleared up question about stereo head unit.

Yes, the mounts in the rear have two speakers in each one. You'll find your AMPs under the front seats. IF you can find a used CD-2 they go for at least $500. A rare piece.

Even the owners manual goes for big bucks:

Thank You!!

Spokayman,

The is a cool one because of the VERY rare interior.

1 of 349 white cabs.
but 1 of 5 when you factor in the Cobalt interior.

Of the 2,008 cabs on 11 had the Cobalt interior so it is a rare site. Looks cool too. There was a guy named Kim in Canada who had a Cobalt exterior with Cobalt interior which was wild. Check the interior condition. Parts will be difficult. And it has a Cobalt top too.

I would love to see this car. Canadian 968s have rear seats. Of the 55 Canadian 968 cabs only 4 of them have the later 993 style interior. This car is one of them and should have the rear seats and not the package shelf. I would love to see a photo of the rear seats.

az968gpw 05-16-2016 06:02 PM

Thanks, Jeff. Car now has a red interior so the black has been redone. It looks a lot like the "special leathers" red on the registry interiors. Any chance Porsche would have not recorded the color correctly? I might be able to have the owner sent me the option codes from the trunk sticke.

I'm sure someone redid it. matter a fact, I remember a black coupe with a custom red interior. As mentioned, the interior code was LT which is Black partial leather. Of course, the dealer could have done anything to make a sale but I'm guessing it is a day-two change.

Hi Marc,

#386 of 667 NA 1992 968 cabs

Factory options include:

I have not seen the car before.

You are in luck. There is a shop in Charleston SC who is owned by one of the biggest 968 enthusiasts in the US, Cliff Hudson. He is a great guy. Here is his website:

http://www.hudsonsimport.com/

Good luck!

chudson 08-23-2016 02:53 PM

Hey thanks Jeff, but I certainly don't deserve all those accolades! IMHO, there are many 968ers more committed than me.

Marc - I certainly maintain, repair and modify my own cars but my shop doesn't service Porsche. But having been in the Charleston automotive community 45 years, I know all the local specialist who do. Call and speak to me personally when you have a need and I'll point you in the right direction. BTW, advice is free and I love talking about cars!

aerolithe 08-23-2016 07:44 PM

Thank you to both of you
I try to call you tomorrow Cliff. I would definitely like your impluse on that car
Thanks

Danny,

That is a special car. It is #7 off the production line. Minty is #9.

#7 of 2,008
G1 Guards Red/black top
LT partial leather in black

691 CD-2 in-dash single disc CD player with am/fm

September 1991 build so it will have the recessed hood badge and larger rear emblem.

That is an interesting one. Only two options, metallic paint and partial leather. It is a rear emblem delete car (code 498).

But is is wild one. 1 of 31 cobalt coupes. A great color on the car. But factor in that super rare cobalt/light grey interior, it is 1 of 5. That interior is wild and very rare.

Could be.

I'm actually more stumped by the exterior. It looks too blue to be Tahoe but I'm not sure if that is Cobalt.

The interior looks like code TU Light Grey/Classic Grey with the optional deviated carpet in a blue. But the front carpet looks marine blue where the back could be cobalt. But photos do strange things to colors.

Nice car.

Hi John,

I got your registry signup so I'll have that out to you shortly.

Your car has only 3 options but you have the one everyone would like:

Metallic paint in N7 Amazon green
Partial leather in cashmere
220 Limited slip!

Can you check the build date for me on the driver's door VIN sticker. Either 1/92 or 2/92.

Thanks for saving it.

Hi Jeff:

Hello, just placed a deposit on a 1994 968, could one of the 968 Guru's run a VIN Check for me? I have done the car fax already and it looks fine, originally a Texas Car.

Thanks in Advance!

Sorry for the double post, I will delete other thread.

I would assume that an emblem delete car was ordered instead of 'off the showroom floor'. sounds like the midnight blue might also be a 'checked box' car due to the colored spoiler.

Where is the best place to source the engine bay trim? I think the cars with it look much better. Like the one below:

I actually thought there would be less white cars with that cobalt blue interior.
I'll let you know the production month once I see the vin sticker.
It does not have the engine trim. I thought the 718 cars had them.

I just ordered the engine trim and CS steering wheel from Sunset Porsche, 2-3 weeks lead time from Germany but price not too bad, Happy it is still available.

Thanks Jeff! ... I just looked at my sticker and see those codes as well. One difference though - after my paint code (L908), I have the letters "VN", denoting "Leatherette/Leather", which appears to be rather rare, from the 968 registry at least: for black interiors, only 26 coupes and 15 cabrios. I also have the 09991 (exclusive program code), followed by 16821, noting "Porsche crest in seat back". Probably not that rare, but cool nonetheless!https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...c35f8c9c61.jpg
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...ac36cb62cb.jpg

jeff968 11-29-2017 02:03 PM

Correct, VN is full leather seats in black. I corrected that in my reply.
You get the 09991 exclusive program with any X option code. Your car has the XD4 painted crests so that is why it appears.
I don't have all the info on the 5 digit interior codes per car. You can see I have a page devoted to them on the site. They are very rare.

You got a really cool 968 there. We discussed it many times here previously. You just need to get those rear seats fixed but that shouldn't be too hard. Only 49k miles. Compared to the one that sold yesterday you got a steal.

the other codes, in case you are wondering, are standard equipment; C02 US emissions, 331 am/fm cassette, 423 cassette holder/console door, 425 rear wiper, 454 Cruise. 650 power sunroof

stefan320 11-29-2017 02:22 PM

Thanks Jeff - I'm excited to get to work on this car and to actually drive it. RL forums have been a great resource for my previous cars and the 968 forum looks to be a great one! I'll be adding my car to the 968 registry shortly (once I get it home and cleaned up).

Your rear seat fix won't be that easy. I'm pretty sure that with the VN full leather seats option that included full leather rear seats. You tell me. Finding a set of leatherette black rear seats would have been easy. Not so easy finding full leather rear seats.

Not at all! I meant your car! I had been watching the Albuquerque CL ad for some time. At one point he was willing to trade car for a garage built on his property. I had a proposal ready to send him to build it! I am with Paul Waterloo on this. Your car is in the realm of the BaT car. You have a very nice 968. Do what Jeff says and get the rear seats fixed:thumbup:

stefan320 11-30-2017 01:24 AM

Oh cool, thanks! I didn't realize this one was well-known :) Yes, I definitely will get those rear seats fixed - my mechanic says there's a good upholstery shop in town that they send other Porsches to, so I'll try them out. The rubber trim/weather seals also need to be replaced, but that should be easier. After that, it'll just need a good wash/claybar/wax and leather/vinyl treament on the inside. Thanks for the kind words - I'm happy to have gotten this one and to learn from you guys as I work on it.

Jeff,

Thank you very much. It is 11/93 build date and that is my car! I just got it about 2 weeks ago and has 60k miles. Overall car is in amazing shape. I am addressing some mechanical issues and some small things that bother me because I am a perfectionist. This is my first Porshce that isn't a 911 turbo of some variant and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Love the community.

1 of 299 Grand Prix white coupes
1 of 31 Grand Prix white coupes with a classic grey interior

March or April 1992 build (if you see it can you check for me?)

Only 1 option, TT partial leather seats in classic grey. But I have seen pictures of the car and it now has partial cloth script seats in classic grey??? I can't explain it. Dealer switch? I have asked for a photo of the vehicle information sticker. It should show the TT partial leather classic grey.

Thanks, Jeff. It definitely has the script seats. I'll ask and report back.

Hi Jeff -- I went to see the car last week. Option code is TT, I took a picture of the sticker, but the seats are script and I think vinyl. Car needs cosmetics and love. Nice seller, I made him an offer and he is considering it....

Well, I'm glad my database proved correct, Still, interesting how a full set of classic grey cloth seats made it into the car. That is a big change but I can see a dealer doing it to make a sale. I have seen cases where a 968 lost its sport seats and 17" wheels during their initial dealer sales. The biggest one was a full repaint done for day one delivery.

From the pictures the Cup 1's looked like knock off's ....were they real Cup 1 wheels?

Careful...at that price if you say 220 and or sport seats you might start a stampede!

Thanks
John

I've got my truck pointed in that direction just in case....

You can tell without pulling the wheels off. Real Porsche wheels have the offset and width displayed next to the valve stem. See photo.

Easy to tell. Look at the valve stem. OEM Porsche wheels have the rim width and offset size cast on both sides of the valve stem, easily seen. Repos don't have this.

Hi Storm,

Here you go:
RS820222
1 of 220 F8 Midnight blue coupes
1 of 89 F8 Midnight blue coupes with a Classic grey interior
#1419 of 2,234 NA coupes (92-95)
#162 of 718 1994 NA coupes

Factory options:
F8 metallic paint in Midnight Blue
TT Partial leather seats in Classic grey
220 Limited slip differential
437 8-way full power seat

A late 94 built in July of 1993 so it has all the late model years changes like the 993-stlye comfort seats and the lack of engine bay trim.
Matter a fact, this coupe is the FIRST model year 1994 coupe that is not a 718 car (previous year, reVINed by Porsche). RS820221 is a 718 car.

Can you check the driver's door jam sticker for me and confirm that it reads 7/93?
Also, be sure to visit 968register.org to learn a lot more about your car. You can sign up for the register as well. It is free. And consider PCA.

Good luck. Jeff

StormTrooper 05-25-2018 12:31 AM

Jeff, thanks so much.
I'll check the door tag and report back. I ran my carfax today as well, I guess I had forgotten that my friend Peter bought this car from the original owner in 2006. It spent 11+ years with the original owner and 12+ years with my best friend. The car spent its earliest years in Connecticut, with service records from New Country Porsche prior to heading to Barrington, IL with the same owner and then sold locally to my friend who also lived in Barrington. I don't believe it spent one night outside the garage for at least the 12 years I've known the car. In fact he only put ~6000 miles on the car in those 12 years. Car now reads 50,700 miles, pics and my own thread once it's landed in Nevada.

PCA membership has remained current during times of Porsche & non-Porsche ownership. I've had 944T's and my beloved Cayman S (all have been white, hence StormTrooper)

Thanks again
Sean

Early car (Nov 91) so it should have the recessed hood badge and larger emblems.

What makes this car unusual is the interior. It has code AB partial cloth seats in black. Of the 2,008 968 cabs, only 31 had the standard cloth seats.

RS820317

Looks like a red coupe with cashmere interior, two options: LC partial leather and that all important 220 Limited slip differential.

This is a late "true" 94 so it has the 993 style comfort seats and lack of engine bay trim.

It was on eBay last month. Black, cashmere interior, 4 options:
LC Partial leather
139 heated drivers seat
418 body side molding
437 8way full power driver's seat

If you see it could you grab the production date on the driver's door jam VIN sticker for me? Either 6/92 or 7/92. Thx

jsheiry 08-24-2018 12:10 PM

Thank you. Would you mind describing what LC Partial leather actually includes? Does this mean seat faces are real leather and not pleather or does it include door panels or just what?

Thanks John

not a Turbo S for sure. This is a "regular" 968 coupe. Matter a fact, only one option, PJ partial leather in marble grey/black.7th to the last 1994. February 1994 build date.

Wow!!! Knew it was too good to be true! Sure looks nice though and being in Hemmings I thought maybe real. I notice link is now broken. Attachment 1290674Attachment 1290673

URG8RB8 09-10-2018 04:28 PM

Interior was pristine black with sport seats. Wish I took some screen captures of the engine, it was cosmetically correct and looked perfect.

jeff968 09-10-2018 05:43 PM

We all know Pete. He runs RS Barn in PA. He is a long time 968er and he actually did own one of the super rare Turbo S 968s many years ago. Not sure the story behind this car but it looks nice.
FYI, you can identify a real 968 Turbo S by its unique VIN series. It has a "9" in it. So for a 1993 you would fine PS8900##, and for 1994 you would find RS8900##. I believe they only made 14 of them.

Jay Wellwood 09-10-2018 06:29 PM

The Turbo S only had the NACA ducts - no intercooler hood duct. Only the Turbo RS had both hood features.

URG8RB8 09-10-2018 07:20 PM

I know Pete very well, I sent the pictures and add to him just before I posted here. The guy in NY has pulled down the add. My Friend Emanuel knows the owner of this white car. A ton and I mean a ton of money was spent on this car with all original Parts but it is Not original as it was listed on Hemmings. Still a great car and I would buy it for the right price. Too bad it went to a dealer.

There are MANY special and extremely hard to find parts that go into a 968 Turbo S. Do you know what was used to build this one?

+1.

Would love to hear about all the factory original 968 turbo S parts that were used to build it.

URG8RB8 09-11-2018 01:12 PM

Exact details no, Emanuel knows though. Cost was north of $150K for parts. I see that this car sold back in 2012 for $72K at the Amelia Island auction. Somebody got a deal there, so it will be north of there now.

FWIW - I came across this parts list a few years ago. You can try to run them through the typical webstores and will find that they just.don't.exist. anymore.

URG8RB8 09-11-2018 04:24 PM

Fortunately, you can build a much better performing turbo S now with all the new products. I plan on doing just that with mine.

true that, but if you want to build a period correct 968 Turbo S you would need all those hard to find parts to do it right.

Unfortunately Jeff can't do RoW cars.

Give your VIN to Porsche AG. They don't do a certificate of authenticity like they do in the US, but they can give you a 'Vehicle Detail Information' instead. this is what I had to do for my NZ '86 944

Tom, here you go:
LT - Partial leather in black - option
C02 - US emissions - standard
139 - heated driver's seat - option

I would like to buy you a beer at a Cubs game if you are ever in Chicago but I recently had a close friend and client pass away and his widow had little information about his 1994 968 cabriolet with tiptronic. Can you work your magic with the VIN. I don't think there is anything very rare on it but the wheels are amazing. Its a chrome porsche wheel and I'm wondering if it is aftermarket or original. the VIN is WP0CA2967RS840470.

Yep, Sir Jeff is certainly very special when it comes to our 968's.

FWIW - regarding chrome wheels, I believe chrome wheels for our cars were never 'officially' offered by Porsche. In my early days in the 928 community, there was discussion from time to time on this very topic - a well read and Porschephile was quick to note that Porsche did not endorse chrome plating of stock OEM wheels primarily due to concerns with the temperature fluctuations the wheels undergo in the plating process.

I hope you will take me up on it if you are ever in Chicago. I have just made arrangements to acquire this car and it only has 29k miles on it. Any thoughts on maintenance if I want to drive it for a summer. It has been in heated storage for the last 15 years. Naturally timing belt and pulleys but any other suggestions? Also do you know of someone who can rebuild the water pump. It works fine but according to my mechanic, they don't make oem anymore. Thanks for your guidance and go Cubs!

Yogii 01-07-2019 07:08 PM

Matt.

My suggestion to you, is the same one that people gave me.
Find a good independent Porsche shop in your area. PCA members might be able to help.
Make sure that they are well versed in transaxle Porsche's, not all are!
Have then do a complete evaluation. Do you have any service records?
At some point, all the rubber needs to be replaced. Hoses, lines, gaskets.
Is the dash cracked? Clutches seem to last 60-90K miles. Tires over 10 years are scary.
Welcome to 968 land...

Where do you live? I live in Forest Park.....when I went to get a new water pump for my 968 (now sold) about 2 years ago the dealer offered both a new option and a rebuilt option. I went with the rebuilt option. Would love to see the car sometime! I have a super nice 944 turbo now.

Jay Wellwood 01-09-2019 10:11 PM

Not to derail this excellent thread any further, but 968 water pumps are still available new from aftermarket suppliers, but not directly from Porsche.

Jeff, there is a coupe being auction by Gooding https://www.goodingco.com/vehicle/1995-porsche-968/ that is claimed to be “among the last five coupes delivered to North America”. It’s a ‘95, vin 820310.
Since the last NA coupe was 820319, wouldn’t that make this one of the last nine instead?
Also, can you tell us what factory options the car came with? Anything else interesting about this car?
One problem I see right off is Cup1 wheels.
Thanks!

Is something wrong with that? 🤭
Seriously, this is probably not the thread to comment on that kind of thing.

Nothing at all is wrong with that. Just not likely to receive the top $$$ that a 6 speed would.

SS820310
You are correct. #2,225 of 2,234.
It is interesting for a couple of reasons. It is 1 of 60 "last batch" 968s that are true 1995s. (not a 718 car). October 1994 build date.
Besides the tip (it is NOT the last tip coupe, SS820312 is), options include metallic paint, partial leather, painted crest center caps, body colored painted rear spoiler, CD-2 in dash single CD player.
Another cool thing about it is that it is one of 16 coupes without the cassette storage and console lid from the factory. (Like the CS)
It came with the standard 16" 5 spokes when new.

RS840305
1 of 443 G1 Red cabs (most popular color on the cab)
1 of 221 G1 Red cabs with a cashmere interior and a black top. (most popular combo on the cab).
#1266 of 2,008 NA cabs (92-95)
#245 of 681 1994 NA cabs

Factory options:
LC Partial leather seats in Cashmere
XD4 Painted crest center caps
249 Tiptronic transmission
437 Full power 8 way drivers seat

A late 94 built in August of 1993 so it has all the late model years changes like the 993-stlye comfort seats and the lack of engine bay trim.

I've seen it before. It was on eBay in May of 2004 in IL with 32K miles.

Sorry, I can't help with that other VIN. Only North American 968s.

Jeff
