'92 968 6 SP wont shift into 3rd or 4th.
'92 968 with the 6spd trans will not shift into 3rd or 4th. Will shift into other gears including reverse, just fine. It just seems that the center channel on my selector lever has been shut. Before it shut out 3rd gear had been grinding occasionally but not on every shift. It was worse at lower RPMS, and it was easier to shift into at higher RPMS. I'm thinking maybe a faulty bearing in the linkage or maybe a bad rod stopper? I'm hoping I don't have to drop the trans, but if worse comes to worse..... Has anyone experienced this before or had a similar problem?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Trying to get it back running before labor day monday! I was going cruising...

UPDATE: I pulled the ball-end screw that holds the selector rods in place and it was in good shape. I looked inside and the rod is intact but still no play at all in 3rd or 4th and refuses to find the gear or attempt to go into it. Any ideas? Maybe the brass Synchro gear? Any Porsche/Volkswagen mechanics on here?

Sounds like the syncro ring was cracked/damaged before hence the rough shifting. If it was cracked it might have opened up more in the 3/4 hub and jammed it. Thats about all I can think of with what you are describing. The trans is going to have to come out to fix it. You could always drive around it........

Welcome to rennlist!
It does sound like the transmission will have to come out. A problem like that is likely an internal problem, not linkage or something like that. Hey, at least it didn't get stuck in 3rd! We had a 964 which got stuck in reverse... it sucked.

bad syncros. rebuild time. since we're talking about 5-6 grand for a proper rebuild, the next question:
you'll be installing some very expensive parts, in addition to your rebulld kit, to be sure.
best off looking for a transmission. where are you located ?
anyway, these guys can help get you started.

A 968 6-speed recently sold on Pelican for $1000 iirc. I have also heard of some places trying to get $3k or more for them. True, they are hard to find, but you shouldn't spend more than $2k imo.
Or get a 5-speed which is much cheaper. Either a 944 turbo or 944 S2 will be strong enough for a 968. Not the "right" way, but it will get by and it's better than shifting from 2nd to 5th. You can compare gear ratios here:
968
944S2
944 turbo
