Speed Yellow coupes!!!!
My coupe registry has progressed far enough so that I can share the data with you on the Speed Yellow coupes. It turns out they are rarer then the cabs with only 8 produced (compared to 10 for the cabs). Below are the details which i'm sure you will find interesting:
There were: 8 Speed Yellow coupes built for the North American market 3 1994s (94.5s actually, true 94s, non-718 cars) 5 1995s (4 718 cars, 1 true 95) 8 were 6 speeds 7 had code LT black partial leather interior 1 had code PJ marble gray/black partial leather interior 8 had 595 painted rear spoiler (all of them) 3 were M030 sport chassis cars Unlike the SY cabs, most of the coupes were well optioned: SYCP #1 – 94 – M030 (includes 17” wheels), painted rear spoiler, NO limited slip SYCP #2 – 94 – limited slip, 17” wheels, painted rear spoiler SYCP #3 – 94 – painted rear spoiler SYCP #4 – 95 - limited slip, 17” wheels, painted rear spoiler SYCP #5 – 95 – M030 (includes 17” wheels), limited slip, dual heated seats, dual 8-way full power seats, painted crest center caps, hi-fi sound speakers, painted rear spoiler SYCP #6 – 95 – limited slip, dual heated seats, dual 8-way full power seats, painted crest center caps, hi-fi sound speakers, painted rear spoiler SYCP #7 – 95 – M030 (includes 17” wheels), limited slip, sport seats, painted rear spoiler, alternate color leather shifter knob SYCP #8 – 95 – limited slip, painted crest center caps, sport seats, hi-fi sound speakers, painted rear spoiler, CD changer Jeff |
I will take SYCP #7

Hey, I'm happy having 'one of eighteen'. Which was Raj's old coupe, shown here?
|
There has been a SY coupe for sale on Autotrader forever, don't know if it's still for sale.

That one is the color to sample "summer yellow" coupe. It is not included in my list above. I'm not sure which one was Raj's old car. Jeff |

Jeff, Correct me if i'm mistaken. The Summer Yellow car is also the last North American Coupe built.
No, that car is the second to last North American 968 coupe. The last North Amercian 968 coupe is a fully loaded black/black car. The black car has Canadian emissions. The summer yellow car has US emissions so it was the last US spec 968 coupe but the US and Canada share the same VIN series so the black car is the last one. Jeff |
So are all 8 speed yellow coupes alive and well?
|
Where does mine fit in the mix? It was a 94 M030 with limited slip and painted rear spoiler.
|
Good question, I've sent you a PM. I've checked my information and I'm thinking your car is #1. I'll double check my data but it looks like the car didn't have LSD from Porsche. If you look at your vehicle information label do you see a 220? You can find the VIL on the first page of the maintenance manual or under the hatch carpet, to the left, stuck to the floor or tail panel.
Jeff |
Solo, I checked my documentaion on the car and no 220 so from the factory that car had no limited slip. Not that surprising, of the M030 cars i have registered 20% don't have limited slip. I'm not sure why. Anyway, on the plus side you have the 1st North American speed yellow coupe produced!!! That is pretty cool.
Jeff |
I see speed yellow Porsches all the time, guess it's become popular because of the 18 coupes and cabs that were made in 94 and 95-when there is a new car intro Porsche seems to always have a speed yellow car. Guess we were ahead of our time.
|
I will check my vin when I get home. I know it has LSD for sure because last week I was getting my new KW suspension installed and when it was on the lift we tested for LSD (hold one wheel and turn the other). It definately has LSD - however, I was told that it has a Porsche Motorsports transmission. How would I check for sure?

I believe #6 resides in north Florida as saw it at the dealership in Mobile, AL a few months ago talked to the owner to find he is the original owner and car has around 40,000 miles and looks as new. it did not have sport seats but has the hi fi stereo and painted spoiler and was a 95.

Jeff, what are the factory option codes for the Summer Yellow Coupe?
I presume that was the only other Yellow 968? Or did you come up with any others? 19 Yellow cars total? |

Dino, Well, I'm not totally done with the coupe registry and the color to sample cars could be anything. That said, so far I only have 1 color to sample solid paint color car and that is the summer yellow car. It is a strange one. Here are the details: #2,233 of 2,234 full run #258 of 259 1995s Paint code 98 - color to sample solid LC partial leather - Cashmere black!!! 220 Limited slip 437 full power driver's seat 694 CD player No center console lid or cassette holder (1 of 16) No 17"s I'm thinking that the summer yellow is more of a mustard yellow and might look better with the cashmere interior then speed yellow would. Jeff |
summer yellow is more pastel and faded, it's lighter than SY.

Thank you Jeff.
odb812, The i believe the 968 is a 1970's shade of summer yellow which is a little diff. then the summer yellow on that 951. I recall this being brought up in a discussion about the car on the other forum. |
Here are a couple pics from the autotrader ad. This car was also featured in an article in excellence magazine.

A classmate had a 944S in summer yellow, bought at Lake Underwood, 356 SCCA champion, dealership Essex Sports Cars.

Jeff,
I really appreciate everything you've done for the 968 registry. It's phenomenal that someone out there besides the factory can actually give owners a clue about how rare their car actually is. |

I just got back from looking at my car again. It's at a different Porsche shop getting an alignment and some general maintenance done. I took another look at the transmission and again confirmed it has an LSD. I asked the mechanic if it was possible to tell if it was a motorsports tranny and he commented that the cooling fins looked bigger than the ones on other 968's he has worked on. Does anyone have a picture of their tranny's I could use for comparison? I'll take some pictures of the underside of mine and post them for comparison.

Here is mine now on OEM 17" Cups...I only know of mine, 1 other turbo and then 1 n/a in summer yellow...if only Porsche would be more helpful of production numbers...the one Todd posted above is not mine...

a buddy of mine owns a Speed Yellow 951. However, it was a repaint. Car was originally white.

Damian,
The Speed Yellow Door Cards and Shift Knob/Boot came on the car as "special wishes" options. How these items read on the Window Sticker: LTHR DOOR PANELS MATCHING INT $267.00 SHIFT LVR KNOB/BOOT IN LEATHER $227.00 The "button/top" of the shift knob is also in Speed Yellow Leather with the shift pattern. It's kewl how Porsche could expertly cover anything in leather! The shift boot discolored a bit with age. I removed it intending to treat the leather with Speed Yellow leather polish, but have never gotten to it :nono: |
Beautiful, and original. Thanks for sharing Rader.
|
Funny, those options were under $500 then but make the car priceless now(besides mileage, ect.).
|
Wow porsche fan..... BEAUTIFUL car!

Very nice, I have never heard of the "special wishes" program. Is SW listed on the window sticker? Where did you hear it?
Thanks Jeff |
I never paid much attention to yellow untill seeing these pics. Yellow now has my full admiration, Wow.

Here's a pic of my Speed Yellow C2S next to my ex "Himberot" Red 968.
Speed Yellow is a bit "tamer" than Ferrari "Fly Yellow." That said, I like both :burnout: |
I am not a fan of yellow cars at all, but it just looks awesome on 968's. Nice cars guys!

Just searched and came up with this.
How rare is the summer yellow 968? Are you saying that only 1 car was made with this color? Do we have any pictures of summer yellow 968's? It seems to rarer than signal green? |
