I had an awesome dream last night, I was driving my 968 on the street and track and no one could touch me. It had a supercharged, water to air intercooled 928 S4 engine, the rush in my dream made me feel like a god.

Then I woke up and slowly realized that I did not have the money required to make it a reality.

Has anyone ever done it?

If money were no object (and it most certainly is) would it be possible to put a 928 S4 engine into a 968?

Would it fit?
Would everything else bolt up or would the trans and everything else have to be 928 as well?
What would it do to the handling characteristics with more weight in the front I'm sure the 50/50 would go right out the window.

I'd doubt it. I have both a 928 and a 968 and the 928 engine is humongous. Chevy smallblock should fit nicely but don't know if the're an adapter kit for it or not. There is a kit for the 928 Porschevy.

There are LS1 kits for 944s and 951s, so they will definitely fit 968s too. I know it's impossible to fit a 928 engine in a 944 or 951, so it's definitely impossible to fit one in a 968. The 928 engine is too wide.

LS-1 or LT-1, your choice. Of course if it fits a 944 it will fit a 968. Just customize or custom-make some cam covers that say "PORSCHE", and tell everone it's a porsche engine. Who cares if it's really a chevy? People put non-porsche suspension parts on their cars and nobody yells at them, and when someone suggests a chevy engine they get persecuted. A porsche is known for nothing if not handling, so putting non-OE handling parts deserves criticism before a non-OE engine does.

If you want a bad-*** v8 and the ability to hand out severe whoopings, I say go for a chevy conversion. The LS-1s are like the same weight as a 968 engine, and with custom cam covers you can't go wrong at all (looks, sound, power, EASIER AND CHEAPER TO FIX OR REPAIR)...

REALLY? Woah... I've seen this question asked a few times on the 944 board, and the answer is always "it's too wide". I'm sure the car in Sebring was greatly modified to be able to carry a 928 engine. Do you have any more info on that car? I'm incredibly eager to hear more (I have a spare 928 engine in the garage)...

Oh yeah, now I remember about the custom tubular frame. I read about that car a while back, and that's what made me give up. But, oh baby, a 928 engine in a 914... Now there's a reason to start saving money.

no way it will fit a factory engine bay. An ej20 subaru WRX engine is even too wide.

Yes, it's a flat layout with DOHC, in fact flat engines are widest than all other designs! Perhaps a Lotus V8TT would fit in there (very compact and potential for over 600hp), but it contradicts the very essence of the 944 series: balance. Even more importantly, recent developments in 2.5l tuning further reduces the appeal of the V8 transplant, and if a swap is all that could meet someone's desires, why not go for a perfectly good and high tech V6? Not glamorous enough?! If room permitted, for kicks, I'd rather go for technology and pick a BMW M3 S54 engine, pretty much half the McLaren F1s engine!

Sure, balance is the keyword, but at the same time, we all love 944s and would love to get more power out of them (or into them). Considering all the possible engines with more power to offer, the porsche 928 v8 is the obvious choice because most of us would be bothered by the idea of having an engine of a different make under our hoods. If this were no issue, then it would be possible to choose a light-weight, powerful engine for a swap project, thereby increasing the power available and maintaining the 50/50 we all love. I'm sure there are a myriad of small, potentially powerful japanese engines out there, but then the question of reliability comes up. Most reliable japanese engines are not powerful enough to justify a swap. It all leads us back to the only reasonable choice (and duely the only common choice): the chevy LS-1. Just my opinion, anyway.

Me? I'm content with 238hp for now (I'm still in awe, just moved up from a 150hp 944). Maybe in the future I'll buy a fuel chip and possibly some exhaust stuff, but I'm not looking to double my power, just a little bonus.
