Head gasket let go at pace over the weekend. Now a rush to get it fixed before silverstone. What should one look to do "whilst you're in there?" EMC have been great again, and promise to have it turned around before EOW.
Managed to get some R888's on there through but didn't have chance to test them, had been looking forward to that.

The belts are the weak link in an interference engine. If one breaks you're looking at bent valves at least. If the belts are new, don't worry about it, but they have to come loose to get the head off so if they have much mileage at all I'd just put on new ones.

If you're crazy like me, you'll do "just a bit more work" and remove the oil pan to change the rod bearings and pistons rings. You can do the rod bearings later but the piston rings require the head off.
But if you're not crazy, other things you can do are replace the main breather hose if it's soft and gummy, replace the two AOS o-rings, replace the cam chain and plastic pads, send out your fuel injectors to get cleaned, and paint or powder coat your intake, valve cover, and vanity cover.
With the head and headers out of the way, you'll have the best access to remove the oil filter housing. The gasket and o-rings can be replaced easily. And in the same area is the heater control valve - put on a metal one, or a plastic OEM part if you wish. You can get a metal one here (1988 Audi 5000):

While the head is off get the head refreshed, mainly to do the valve guides which wear on these engines and cause a loss of power. Maybe get your injectors serviced as well. Check the variocam system, sprocket wear on the cams, chain and pads on the tensioner.
