Turbo S tranny

Nope, completely different unit with different gears, out put shafts. As far as the clutch, it is more like a 951 setup but with a higher clamping pressure plate and stronger disk.

the RS has shorter gears. shorter than a stock '68.
the Turbo S, (Raj will probably correct me) has differnent gears AND final drive than the stock box. for example, i believe 6th gear is like a 0.773 instead of the .778. and the differential is also a tad longer. the result being about 175 mph at 6,000 rpm and redline upwards of 185 +.
i purchased two very hard to source, Audi S4 2.7 twin-turbo 01E 300 045G - 5th and 6th gearsets... w/ 5th perfect, 0.806, and 6th: 0.684 gears.... recently...
and what made it really special was that i paid only 400 dollars for the 2 gearsets ! (good things come w/ over a year waiting). now they're about
$ 2,500.00 from the dealer.

There are 2 gearsets for the RS, one has the same as the NA 968, the other has the same 1-4 but with a shorter 5th and 6th, both have the same final drive as the NA. The 968 turbo S has the same 1 - 4 with a longer 5th and 6th plus a longer final drive.

You sure the "S" is street legal?
Correct me if I'm wrong but........
I know in California you can get a "show and tell" permission slip for up to 1,500miles a year. This is the only way to drive the non-NHTS cars in California ie: 959, Bugatti EB110, Audi RS2, etc.
I would call that kinda street legal.

the taller Audi gears have been installed in several 968 boxes. some minor "notching" is required for top gear... Roger at California Motorsports (has done several swaps) and was the person who pointed out that it would be far better to do 5th gear as well, and that the proper gears are available... since the reason you'd be going to a taller 6th gear is because you have the horsepower in the first place. once that happens your stock 5th gear is now too close to 4th gear (too low to really be a useful gear).
by adding that taller 5th, you're now driving a box that's almost identical to the 968 Turbo S box.
there is also a 200 mph, Audi S4, .600 gearset that will fit.
as i mentioned above in my edited post, i waited two years for a damaged Audi S4 box to become available (for less $$$) that had the gears i wanted....
swapped into the 968 box, the car will reach the redline in 5th gear just north of 150 mph, roughly the same as the Turbo S box, and the redline in top gear will be about 183 mph, a few mph short of the Turbo S box.
the guy selling me the gears has now rebuilt the box with shorter track gears for a client. win.

I'm sure by "street legal" Damian meant that the turbo S was intended to be a street-able car, while the RS was intended to purely be raced. Besides, they're perfectly street legal in their native market which was Europe (or was it solely Germany?).
