Yearly cost of ownership
#2
Mine is a garage queen and doesn't see much in the way of mileage (2,000 to 4,000 per year typically) but my maintenance costs have been minimal. I do my own work which makes a big difference, but aside from last year, when I did tires, struts and shocks, motor mounts and a steering rack, its been as inexpensive a car as I have owned in thirty years of driving. I did belts/rollers when I first got the car, and have done them once since then. I am getting ready to replace the hall sensor since the connector on mine disintigrated and will inspect the chain tensioner at that time (I just rolled over 60k miles), but its been mostly just regular fluid changes for me.
I love the car, altho I have toyed with the idea of getting rid of it due to a lack of use on my part. Its not fair to let it just sit, but when push comes to shove, I doubt I could actually part with it.
Regards,

The big thing is variocam maintenance, or a head rebuild if you skip it. That should be done around 100k-130k miles or so. Yearly stuff isn't much, and compared to a 951 things like the clutch are easy and a lot cheaper if you pay for labor.
It'd be fair to figure on two small repairs and one medium every year (less than $1000 total if you fix it yourself.) Maybe a major every 5 years? Brakes and tires depend on what you like and how you drive.
$1500 a year out to about do it if you fix it yourself (banking the extra money when you don't need it one year.) Maybe $3k-$5k a year if you pay shops?

Your 1st yr maintenance could be high if you are trying to get everything up to snuff. After that, it should go down every yr. It all depends on how much the car has been neglected and what needs to be done right away.

Race Car
Most don't consider front engine Porsches very special but pretty much everywhere that I drive mine people comment on it. Surprisingly, even guys at the local PCA autocross where I see Cayman, 997, GT2, and GT3 lots of them say my car is really clean, love it, looks fast, etc which I think is very cool because it's just a 968...

The key is to purchase a car without any issues. It'll cost you far more to repair versus buying a car that someone has cared for properly and has no outstanding issues. I spent just under $5K in the last year on new brake rotors, pads, motor mounts, M030 sway bars, new bushings, water pump, rocker moldings and hatch seals. Labor included - I had a professional handle the repairs and installations.

Every year is different and I see no real pattern. I do around 10k per year and have not had a problem for a while. But, some years I have spent thousands. Best not to add it up.
Just did new tires - that recurs every 18-22k. Variocam service is on my horizon, as is a hatch repair or replacement.

The only wild card is if you track the car. Although the one I bought is in excellent condition, track use accelerates the stuff that may take years longer to wear out / need to be replaced. Think of track use as a way to find out what really needs to be replaced on the car...now. It is like my wife says, "one weekend track event is like 1-2 years of road use (but all compressed into one weekend)".

Larry, are you including polish for the car and photo development for pictures of Jessica, or are there upgrades involved? Nice to see another Horizon Blue cab owner here!
