Default 968 Auto Trans or Manual

Hello, I'm thinking about getting a 968 auto. How are the Triptronic's for reliability, it seems many are replaced before 80K is this normal?

thanks

The one major down side of the tips is the dampner plate. Is is a big rubber disc that sits where the clutch would be on a 6 speed. The part itself is around $1000 and it takes about 15-20 hours to change it.

I have about 75k on mine (with Tip) with no issues, just inspected the damper and it still looks new (no cracks or flaking).

I would say that 80k+ miles would be a good guess. Porsche designed eveything else on the car so well I can't imagine that they would not design the trans to hold up for a long time.

As a two time tip owner - living in the Seattle area - I like my Tip. But no doubt it is slower getting started that any Stick. However - the quick starts do take there toll on clutches for the 6 speed. From many conversations in the Porsche club and on the net I would comfortably say the Tip (with damper) will out live the 6 speed (with clutch) 2 to 1. These transmissions are designed to pull a much larger car - the same basic unit is in my Audi A6 Avant Quatro without the "Tip" electronics. While the A6 has less horse power that the 968 this shows the tranny is used in applications that are pushing way past 6 figure miles all the time. I have 90,000 on the Audi with no issues and have spoken to other owners approaching double that with no issues. And - I am sure that if the 6 speeder keeps slogging through traffic - the cost of a clutch(s) will well exceed the damper.
