Default Good Source for Windshield Glass?

The Chinese are making some replacement Porsche windshields for cheap(Pilkington??) but you have to pick through them to get one without "waves" or imperfections in the glass. At least, they're making hard to find glass. I'd like to get some non-Chinese glass at a good price if I could.

I'm trying to put together a Group-Buy on windshields for 928ers in the Seattle/Portland region. Does anyone know of an outfit that I could contact? A national chain or small dealer with connections. I don't know why 968 glass couldn't be a part of the deal.

A California group of guys worked up a deal where "My Little Red Truck" or something like that actually installed a half-dozen new windshields for under $300 each while the guys held a BBQ. They had to wait at least 4 hours for the adhesive to set so why not party? I've not yet had luck finding a similar and willing seller that will ship quality glass to the NW.

I have heard that glass can be had for cheap if sent to and picked up at a regional glass warehouse. If you know a source, I'd be interested.

Thanks,

Harvey

There is plenty of OEM glass sitting in Ohio.

Some say that can not get them. My local Binswanger guy took the info, ordered the windshield and installed it for <$300. You might be able to buy direct for your group buy.

Bruce, Have you tried to get this glass lately? I just went through this and was told by the people in Ohio that they did not carry it anymore. The only place I could get it was from the dealer.

I got a new sekruit winshield back in January. Ordered from the dealer (my friend is a GM there). It took over a month to receive it from germany.

He gave it to me for $415.
Another $140 at Safelite to install.

As far as I know you can only get the winshield with an antenna, unless you find a good used one.

Mine has the antenna too. I was told it is the only one available now. They had one in Atlanta so I was lucky.

Does anyone have any updates on availablility or sources for 968 windshields...? Based on this thread sounds like the Chinese glass is to be avoided.

A 12" crack just materialized in mine - so now I'm looking for a replacement.

Mucho thanks...!

I needed a windshield as recently as 2 weeks ago...Couldn't find a glass one, so I bought a pexiglass one from Pete at RS barn.

He really helped me out of a jam!

I called the Sekurit guys in Ohio (per a previous post) but they confirmed they have no 968 inventory.
All Star Glass here in SoCal took my order for PPG glass, $350 + $100 installation, but then called back to say they couldn't get it afterall. Apparently they can get it direct from Porsche, but it's $717 + installaton. I'll keep calling aound.

I ordered a 1988 944 Windshield from Safelite and had it installed for $195 a month ago (A friend has a dealer’s license so the price is a little lower than for non–dealers also didn’t tell Safelite it was a 968 that would just get them confused). It's a track car and looks ok, not perfect but no one would notice the difference between the factory windshield and it unless you mentioned it, beats looking thru cracks. I had the windshield changed out in my 911 and had a rock the size of a golf ball hit it the next day so I won’t be getting factory windshields again unless I’m restoring a car and leaving it on a trailer. And yes I have insurance but if I make a claim for every windshield with a crack in it I would be dropped. It was a FW360. I can post a picture if anyone is interested.

20th street auto here in Phx is a Porsche recycler (junkyard...). They have a ton of glass. http://www.20thstreetauto.com/

Last time I had one replaced I got Safelite and told them I only wanted OEM (no problem and no extra $$). That was replaced becaus of a spread chip.

Default FW360 windshield in 968

I've never posted pictures in this forum before. These are the pictures of a 1988 944 Windshield in a 1995 968. Called a FW360 (Foreign Windshield) 360. This is a track car and is on its 3rd windshield in a year of racing / DE / Lapping days etc. Notice the top corners have a slight gap. It dried this way but could easy be glued down if desired. I believe that if pushed up a 1/32 of an inch this gap and the slight recessed angle at the top wouldn't be there. This windshield was installed in probably 30 minutes and does not leak or move around or buckle out, it’s just a windshield. Since windshields are rather expensive this is the way to go with a track car or a non - concourse car. I imagine creative individual could take their original windshield seal and make it look better. This seal came attached to the windshield from installer. I will post the other pictures behind this one since preview only shows one picture.
