'94 968's value
I'm looking at a '94 968, owner states less than 60k miles, coupe, tip tranny, leather interior. I don't know about records or maintenance I've just started the inquiry and have received a few pictures. Car looks pretty good from pics, no damage apparent and some slight finish cracking to the driver's seat. I've been quoted an asking price and it seems very good, almost too good.

If it was a six speed I would think 15K - 18K depending on options, servicing and condition. Since its a tip I would knock at least 3K off of those prices.

If it passed an inspection and I wanted a tip I would jump on it.
The tip is an early design, its not so much that the tip is faulted but the 6 speed is a wonderful design. If I was going to but a tip I would probably go for a Boxster myself, it has a newer transmission and a lot has changed in tip desig over the years.
I say drive both and pick the one you want. For driving in stop and go traffic or if you prefer automatic then its a great car that is destined to become a classic with the right transmission for you.
And it <$10K its a steal!

The NADA total price depending on condition ranges from $16,071 to $19,571. Suggest check at the NADA and KBB sites, as the seller likely has done so and has built up expectations based on those numbers. Also, go armed with knowledge of similar cars offering prices listed on AutoTrader - if you call AutoTrader sellers and their 968 has sold, ask them how much and what condition, etc. Many postings on AutoTrader are already sold so it is a good way to check the market.
Elsewhere on this thread $10K was mentioned for this 968. If car is "honest" and seller has done homework, that would be an insult offer and consider negotiations over, and prepare to continue search elsewhere. There is a cost to lowball offers. If $10K is accepted, then either car is not as represented, or this is your lucky day.
Someone who adds less than 6k miles on their car each year has a second or even third car, so is unlikely to be desparate to sell. Selling by this person is likely viewed as an opportunity to make garage space for something else.

I have made no offer...the figure "less than 10K" is the asking price. There could quite possibly be negotiation on the price. I don't really want a tip tranny, but the price is very tempting. I've owned 5 different 944 variants since 1985, all with manual trannies; I'm afraid the tip would leave me wanting, but the price is so right I'm going to pursue this car and get more info.

If you choose to pass, then at $10K and if this is an "honest" 968, then TIP or no TIP, if the contact information of the seller were published on this board or 968.net , it will be sold pronto. Someone on 968.net recently posted that they were looking for such a low mileage TIP coupe.

Bones,
If you decide to pass, please give the buyer my number 704-906-4563 (or email me with their info). I would love to have a red coupe to sit next to the red cab.

Unless you are capable of doing your own work, save your money. But for the DIY'er, this car is a screaming buy.
How do I know? I had a PPI done by Dougherty's on this car last week. I passed on it once I found out the cost of making it all right.
1. It has a mileage rollback issue, which might be explained away (ask the seller)
2. The driveline is shot - needs a new flex disc.
3. No records = hasn't been done. New belts/pump/roller/tensioner/seals STRONGLY recommended.
4. Compression = 150psi, leakdown = 14%, 14%, 6%, 14%
5. Collision eveidence in passenger rear quarterpanel and door. Paint color nicely blended, but bright in comparison to faded bumper valence. Passencer door sounds "tinny", as in no sound-deadening mastic.
6. Dished front brake rotors need replacement.
7. Other nickle/dime stuff - all fluid changes, new battery, inoperative handbrake, tires, etc.
But at $10K, and excellent buy if you can do the work yourself.
There, I just saved you $275 on a PPI!
