made another attempt to acquire some Cup I wheels on BAT. They went For $2,700. + costs. Is this just a blip or at some point in the future will the price point on the wheels calm down? I’m just wanting to equip my 968 with the premium wheels from 1992. Starting to think I may have to settle for something else.
Yes, they were the 968 specific (7.5”) width front and 9” rears. Getting more rare and expensive.
I’d recommend watching eBay, hemmings, PCA classifieds, Rennlist classifieds, etc.
Clearly not the 968 market driving these wheel prices. Yes they were the 7.5's for 968's but the 964 market is what has Cup I's off the chart, we kinda like them too! If they were refreshed and true/straight thats about as cheap as you will find them in auction sites, BAT has gotten 4K a few times for nice ones. The 964 typically had 7's & 9's but 7.5's fit fine as far as I know. There were also some 8's I believe, perhaps 7's & 8's
Its just like paying $500-750 for a CR1 CASSETTE radio.....the 964/993 market is driving these as well. Its a shame we dont share a few more parts in common because if you found a beat up 92 968 with nice Cup I's and a CR1 radio you could get half your money back by selling the wheels and cassette player!
Sounds crazy but you see some beat up 968's occasionally for $7500 with Cup I's, buy the car and put your 16" wheels on it, get any other little nick/knack you need and resell for $6500. Get your wheels cheap, the car will sell quickly at a cheap price. Or....compete with the 964 crowd restoring their $75K machine for a nice set of Cup I's.
There are a few sets of Cup1 knock offs with the correct offset, be careful there are a few sets with early 944 offset. They look pretty nice and can be had for $400-$800 with tires. Sport seats too. I know of a beautiful 968 coupe that had sport seats with mint green piping that were swiped for a 964

Gave away 17" Cup I's or the available anywhere 16" standard 968 wheel Cup I ? Multi thousand dollar difference in the two wheels.

Have a set of the Mille Miglia correct offset and with nice center caps from 10ft you could hardly tell the difference when you cant see/read the wheel width at the valve stem. I bought these thinking I would paint them black as I could hardly stomach the thought of painting one of the real sets. The 17" Cup I's in the early offset are quickly identifiable as knock offs and look goofy on our cars as the way the 5 spokes come at you it just screams incorrect. Both 17" and Cup I style but worlds apart visually based on the wheel offsets.
This is just me but I can tell the Mille miglia wheels a mile away and I can't stand them. It's amazing how just changing the shape a tiny bit to a flatter spoke destroyed the design. I cringe when I see them on any Porsche. But that's just my taste.
Aren't these Cup1s still available new from Porsche for aboud a grand each? Wouldn't that be the absolute upper limit for the price of a perfect used set?
