Different issues with a 968 I just bought
Hello
I am new to the forum and just got a 968 as part exchange. I am considering keeping it - therefor a few questions that I hope you can help me with (and now in the right forum):
1) The clutch biting point is very low - almost at the bottom of the pedal travel. I guess that would be a new clutch; is that a chore to change on a 968 and where would you recommend to buy the spare part?
2) There is a rather loud scrambling/rattling (?) noise when starting in 1st gear. Only at very low speeds when the clutch engages. A bit more rews and the noise dissapears.. Common issue?
3) Below 2000 RPM in all gears, the car rumbles quite a bit. Like if you are driving in too tall a gear. Though with the torque the car has, I guess it must be something else. Maybe related to 2)
4) The heater blows rather hot air out in the footwell, eventhough it is set to cold..
Very thankful for any ideas on these matters.
Best regards
CJ

Welcome.
#1 - Maybe check the clutch lining, the service manual shows a way to measure via an inspection hole. You can probably find a download of the service manuals somewhere.
#2 Not sure what this might be, never heard it myself unless maybe it's the alternator belt slipping. Alternator belts are run crazy tight (as per factory spec) in these cars IMO, tighter than I think is good for the related parts.
#3 Motor mounts are a common issue, they shake below 2K rpm. There is a lot of talk about how you need the OEM ones ($$$) but I recently installed Meyle mounts. It'll be a few years before we know if I wasted my time with 'em but I think they'll be fine.
#4 People might direct you to a broken clip on an arm for the HVAC system down under the LH dash for this issue and maybe so, but there are a lot of issues to look into here.
Is it defrosting as well as running footwell heat?
Is there vacuum to the system? To the vacuum can near the battery? How's the vacuum check valve?
The heater valves are suspect, I replace with an Audi 5000 part I feel is more robust. The valves can leak hot water even if closed but if there is no vacuum to the HVAC brain there will always be hot water to the heat.
The control heads can fail and stuff also but first check the free/easy stuff.
Read up on the stuff that causes fires, catastrophic valvetrain damage, etc. and get on that stuff also.
Check for PS leaks, these damage other expensive stuff like control arm bushings nearby
If you go after the motor mounts make a list of other stuff to maybe do also at the same time to save hassle. Oil pan gasket, rod bearings, steering rack, control arms, etc.
Cheers,
-Joel.

If your clutch isn't slipping I wouldn't think it would be the clutch disc lining. Especially at a high torque situation. Try bleeding the system and possibly adjusting the clevis on the clutch pedal.

Clutches are designed so that as the friction disc wears, the engagement point becomes higher in the stroke and not closer to the floor. There is a lot to discuss to respond to all your questions. Sending PM

Hi all
Thank you so much for all the answers! I am unfortunately not the DYI-person myself, so I will get it to a specialist and hopefully get the things diagnosed. I live in DK where Porsche specialist is a scarce ressource, but I found out today that a friend of a friend had a good contact, so I will try in that direction and keep you posted, also for future reference. Thanks again, it has been most helpful.
