Engine / trans price check

ITEMS ARE NOW FOR SALE - POST #11

I'm assisting a friend who wishes to post his engine and trans for sale. Both are out of a "true" '94 (non 718)85,000 mile cab that was t boned in the passenger door. The vehicle is a southern (SC) car (no corrosion - engine and trans very clean) and the car was owned by an automotive professional (well serviced - well cared for). The car has been in dry storage 8 years and both components were just removed from the vehicle. The diff is open (non LSD). The engine would obviously need t belts and the associated components. At this time, a quick search found only one comparable engine and no transmissions for sale. Opinions? Thanks in advance and please note, there are NO OTHER components from the vehicle that will be offered for sale.

Cliff:

Are you looking for what the trans and engine should be listed at?

For the transmission, if he has the axle shafts, guys with 944's are interested in that swap....I think they would go for $2000 sell price, maybe a $2500 asking price?

As far as the engine goes, I am uncertain of their value, but I don't think it's very high because they don't fail, so there is not much of a demand for them. I would think a $3-4K asking price is probably the highest you could ask for it and actually get inquiries. Is it just the engine and nothing else? No wiring harness, motor mounts, etc?

PM sent.

Hey Paul and Jay - thanks for the input and the PM.

As for Paul, good catch. The engine was removed as a unit with the complete wiring harness and the ECM. So yes, short of A/C compressor, starter, alternator and p/s pump, it would be complete. Yes, the axles are with the trans. Another good catch!

As for Jay - sorry bud. Nothing else is available.

I don't know - 3.0 liters seem to be pretty popular with the 944 crowd as far as potential upgrades, so it seems like there might be at least a moderate demand for a sound 3.0l. But on the other hand (and this is by no means a slight to anyone, just an obseration), owners of 30-year old project cars often don't have the deepest pockets, so there may be significant daylight between desire and ability to pay...

My concern exactly. It seems that we frequently see 2 types of 968s; the way above average to pristine condition and the cars that are well worn and beat. The excellent condition cars rarely if ever are allowed to get to a point where an engine is needed and the beat cars are patched or discarded if they suffer a catastrophic failure.

As to the 944 owners wishing to upgrade, your point is well taken. There is likely only a handful that would consider the investment that going 3.0 would require. Thanks to all for the input and I suppose I'll post these a couple of places and see what happens. The worst I can hear is crickets....

For reference, Car-part.com has one engine from a '94 for $3950. No reference on miles. There are no transmissions on their site.

listing the pair at $5k would get a quick sale.
