There's a lot that could be wrong, from as simple as either of the two gears (plastic, and if that's the problem, replace the both, in fact if you are into the roof area go ahead and replace them both but get everything back in exactly the right place) to the cable that runs back to the motor, to the motor. And then alignment. Can be complicated, you can guess how I know.

I will lay out my sunroof problems here and maybe someone has advice that works (I tried in the overall 924, 944, 968 forum). I have studied and read the Clark's Garage write up and watched countless videos but nothing seems to help my problem. Ok. The gears were broken so I ordered 2 new gears. I installed them but sometimes, and I repeat sometimes, the limit for closing the sunroof does not trigger (in ignition 2) so the motor keeps pulling the cable until it shoots out the back (see picture below). This caused my gears to strip immediately upon putting everything back together. So I ordered 2 new gears. I played for a while with the rocker switch and it no longer operates at all in ignition position 1 (to release the sunroof). In ignition 2, the limit works when opening the sunroof and it stops as normal. However, when pressing the rocker switch to close the sunroof it never stops and always shoots the cable out the back. When that happens I have to put the sunroof back up (rocker switch) until all the cable is fed back into the passenger side of the roof and engages that gear. I tried adjusting the slippage but that did nothing. I am not sure if the cable is stripped, the micro switch is bad, the gears in the motor are bad or how to figure it out.

I have exorcised the demon! After spending way too much time reading about the sunroof operation and taking mine apart I noticed that there are 2 "paws" on the back of the motor which trigger the motor off when the cam comes around. After 24 years the paws were nearly straight so when the cam went over them the limit on ignition 1 was always engaged (so it wouldn't operate) and under ignition 2 it would sometimes operate but when it didn't it caused the cable to come out the back. I simply bent the paws up a bit and the sunroof worked. I put it all back together following a video on the gear replacement and it aligned perfectly.

Now if someone has an extra screw for the roof-plate they wouldn't mind sending my way so I can put this all back together I would be finished. The car came missing one of the screws but I am sure I can find it.

Is the screw a Porsche specific screw? Metric I assume?

It is Porsche specific. I tried to order from Sonnen but it is only in Germany and I would have to wait a month. Oh and $40 shipping on a $.75 screw. So seeing if someone has one lying around...

Really, a euro sourced part only? You might check some other dealers - Scottsdale has been able to get me great prices on parts. Sunset is very good. Try some dismantlers - 20th st Auto in Phoenix, LA Dismantlers. I would think you could google the specs (from PET) and find a domestic source for a similar screw.

I called all the dealers and nobody has it. But locally they said it would be here in a week for minimal charge so I ordered it. Annoying but true.

Screwed by hard-to-find little bits, eh? Something we all are used to.

The $10 screw finally came so finished up the sunroof repair and put it all back together. Tackled installing stainless steel brake lines courtesy of RS Barn and these are the best ones on the market. I had to send another set back to a great online store but they didn't work. My front calipers had a little peeling of the clear coat so I took them off and am sending them out. To be honest, I tried to paint them myself but after 1 hour of sanding and not making much progress I farmed this project out. The cost was not much more than supplies so why waste my time.

Out with the old

In with the new

there are some vibration isolators that adhere to the rear of the brake pad and clip into the caliper pistons

Tom, if these are missing do the pads give a clunk when backing up and applying the brake?

bmw, I feel your sunroof pain. I think its possible that my cable has snapped as if I get the passenger side gear to just engage it then the limit switches are way off.

The sunroof is a real problem. Mine was simply an issue of the limit switches being bent straight. You should check that out before spending money on anything drastic. Remember that that cable can be pulled past the passenger side gear if the limit does not shut off and if you keep it going the whole thing will spit out the back into the trunk. Keep an eye on that.

The pads really do not need the clips on the back as they are held in place by "slots" and should not rattle around.
