Default driveline noise

well finally got the car on the road, pulling an all nighter! (and then drove it 70mi)

So for the most part things seem ok.
Only thing that slightly concerns me is this slight driveline noise im hearing over 30mph. I have read about the Pinion gear issue. Wondering if it might be that but, not sure it matches. (plus youd think it would have happened already??)

The noise sounds like a electric motor, kinda like a dremel tool. But its fairly faint, if the radio worked I might not have heard it.

its coming from the shifter, but I understand the torque tube can transmit sound.

Keep in mind this car has 162k on it.

Im pretty sure its not a wheel bearing.

one thing I did notice was the shifter boot has shrunken and when the car is in gear it tugs on the lever a bit and makes like you are putting slight pressure on the lever and can hear the forks in the tranny riding. (went away when I pulled the shift boot off)

only other thing I noticed, if I wanted to be picky was it was a tiny bit notchy shifting, meaning it wasn't buttery smooth.

I have no idea, if/when the trans fluid has been changed.
think that could help anything, if so what do you guys recommend?

Does the trans have oil in it?

if the output flange seals are bad, the fluid level is an inch low.

I hade to change the carrier bearings on the differential. the starboard bearing wasn't so pretty.

I didn't see any evidence of any leaks at the transmission

I think the pion problem is a lot louder than that. It could just be a shifter bushing, there's a lot of vibration that goes through that.
I use Motul 300 gear oil. https://www.motul.com/us/en-US/products/gear-300-75w90

Does the noise change when accelerating/decelerating? Normally bad pinion bearings are louder on decel. These cars aren't quiet, I wouldn't be surprised if it was normal gear whine

No, it doesn't really seem to change pitch much. just notice it at higher speeds

I just changed the gear oil to redline 75/90NS, drained fluid was a little dark, only saw a couple of small flecks.

Only was able to take it around the block afterwards, but shifting was still kinda notchy unless I tried to rev match :-(
Thought maybe the clutch needed to be bled, but it seems to full disengage.

With 162k on the car, notchy shifting is going to be expected. You could try some Swepco gear oil, the blue stuff its 201 I think, after you put some miles on the trans to see if that helps.

Actually I was going to put swepco 201, but was steered towards the redline.
you really think the swepco might make a difference?

I have put it in air cooled 911 transmissions and 944/968 that were notchy and it did help. Personally i think Redline is bettet overall, but Swepco seems to work better for smoother shifting

Maybe my gear box is just a loud unit. I have the invoice from the rebuild completed 2 yrs before I became the owner. I couldn't remember if I did a oil change when I took ownership so I changed the oil Sat eve. New SWEPCO 201 Blue. No real change in the noise level, the shifting was never a problem so its pretty much no change. O well.
